My Australian unlocked, unbranded SGS2 updated OTA to 4.0.3 today. I've only played with it for an hour but so far I'm almost wishing I hadn't accepted the update. I didn't have any issues on the previous update (2.3.6) and I guess I was just used to the UI. I haven't yet noticed any benefit from this update. Will give it a couple of days to settle in and see what I think then.

Darky LPQ, all those other roms you guys are running are rubbish IMO.

Ive tried them all.

I'm glad your battery life is good, but it's no better than any other current ROM I've seen that's been properly set up (stripped back, and optimized etc). Respect to Darky though; he does cook a good ROM.

I agree. I didn't find Darky's roms significantly better or worse than anyone else's - once you've set them up - but their support and community leaves xda for dead. Much friendlier.
Roms are such a personal choice that you'll never please everyone as they all have different priorities and preferences. I'm just glad we've got such a wide range to choose from.

Good point about the support in the Darky community. . . . .I've had a growing discomfort for a wee while now about the custom ROM scene - it's in an awkward no-man's-land between complete mainstream adoption and underground usage by those with enough nouse to avoid issues, or dig themselves out. I think XDA has become a victim of it's own success, and is now trapped with a model that can't support the user base (due to it's size and lack of technical ability). The recent hard-bricking caused by the Siyah RC6 release just shows how little people really understand what they're meddling with, and the fact that these Devs like Gokhan are (and should be!) all care and no responsibility.

Some roms are better than others but most people that claim crazy long battery life achieve it by tweaking the bejesus out of their phones or barely using them, neither option makes sense to me, i bought the phone for what it can do not how long the battery lasts :P

That said given equal use I find CM9 to offer substantially better battery life than samsung roms i have used to date. Biggest gains are in screen on times, best i could acheive on a sammy rom was about 2.5hrs, whereas on CM9 I can regularly hit over 3hrs (best was 3hrs 28mins)

Based on this your results, you will get 400 hours of battery life. I suspect you should give us the results after 24 hours or so. I don't believe there is a smartphone on the planet that is getting used, that could sustain that level of battery drain.

I moved from 2.3 that worked just fine with custom DPIs. Up to Omega and now CM9, and on all versions I've been getting android.process.media going crazy and sucking battery for periods of a few mins to an hour or so. It can flatten my battery real quick. This on Omega v8-11.1 (4.03), and CM9 (4.04)

Now I've returned to DPI of 240 and I've had no issues with battery or android.process.media all day.

So I'm wondering whether anyone using a custom DPI will have battery drain issues.

I've been running 192dpi on several different ics roms (Resurrection, Wannamlite, Darky, Omega, CM9) and have never encountered that issue.

Isn't that the media scanner process though? If it is will a reboot fix it or is it persistent?
