Just wondering whats people thought on this, I sub to sky basic package with a not very good motorola box. The install was 9 months ago and the signal levels are very low on discovery channel with quality down to 30% this is causing glitching. The motorola box also takes ages to get epg data with lots of tempory faults. I have asked sky to realign the dish and change the box. I also have a twin tuner technomate linux box that I brought from the uk that I use for IPTV watching movies and uk tv. I also have a second dish installed which I installed myself. I cannot put my sky card in the linux box as its the gold card but should I removed the linux box and dish and cable before the sky guy come as I think he may get a bit funny or should I just leave it there. Also are there any better boxs than the motorola box for the basic package?
The silver PACE box is much better with faster channel switching times and better all-round specs. I would simply put your Linux box out of sight when the Sky technician comes but not bother about taking your extra dish down. So long as it's clear that the original Sky dish and Decoder haven't been tampered with, you should be fine. With any luck, you might even get the blue smartcard starting with NZ45... that you need to use in 3rd party decoders. These are commonly used with the silver PACE decoders, but the only guaranteed way is to stump up for MySky. Then you definitely get the correct smartcard.
I think I'll go as you suggest and remove the box ect, I'll get the other half to ask for a pace box if its possible. The moto box has some real issues with epg most of the time the epg is not available and if your look a few hours ahead and then scroll back there is no listing at all. All very weird.
The Motorola box was good until they flooded it with fancy screens and unnecessary frills. The silver Pace box is really nice, and you will get it (AFAIK) if you say you need component video for your TV. It is a good box, but it also looses the EPG frequently (I had 2 or 3 which did it, so assume they all do it). MySky has a different way of doing the EPG and I have never seen it lost.
The only reason we got MySky is because they actually phones us and asked if we want a free upgrade install with 6 month no extra rental and 12 months contract. We have about 4 months left, thinking maybe should look at UltraPlus to also run as media player and replace our cheap old Chinese media player.
When I called sky the other night I played it cool and basically asked them what type of price I would have to pay to get the hd package, I also told them I was skint. But due to I was calling service and not retentions they offered me nothing. I got offered a hd box @ $600.00 but no further costs after that for as long as I had the box or £99.00 installation plus $20.00 a month thereafter. Needless to say I did not take the offer up. Thing is I have two hd box's here with me, a tmtwin-oe and an original dm800hd I also know these box's very well and know exactly what I could do with them with the right card. In the uk although I paid more we got a much better box and they are infact trying to give hd box's to those left with sd only.
