Hi There

I was wondering if you could help me. I have a 55 inch LG LED TV and MySkyHDI and HD ticket

I have a problem when watching live sport, particually filmed in NZ or Australia. When it is LIVE and a fast moving picture (say the camera following a fielder chasing the ball to the boundary) Horizontal lines appear around the edge of the player, say where his clothing meets the background). If I rewind it a minute, and replay, the problem doesnt seem to occur.

It does not happen on Amercian sport (say ESPN) nor does it happen on movies or the bluray player.

Sky referred me to Harvey Norman where the tv was purchased - Harvey Norman pointed out that the tv is probably fine if its not happening on all channels or devices.

Any thoughts?

The difference between the Sky Sport channels compared to Bluray and ESPN is Sky Sport video is interlaced and the others are progressive. This means the TV is not deinterlacing and likely has a fault.

I believe you can switch the MySky to output 720p instead of 1080i so it does the deinterlacing. You will lose a little resolution but should resolve the interlaced artifacts.

You pretty much have a tradeoff. ESPN HD is 720p, but Sky Sport broadcasts like Super Rugby etc. are 1080i. Either you have higher resolution with interlacing or lower resolution without the interlacing. However, decreasing Sky Sport to 720p will most likely not be as sharp as ESPN HD 720p due to ESPN being native 720p and Sky Sport not being native at 720p. Also, ESPN HD is very well known for it's great sharp picture quality. I read that, with FOXTEL in Australia, they receive the Oceania ESPN HD channel feed direct from the USA over a fibre optic cable at some rediculously high bitrate then downscale it to a more realistic bitrate to broadcast over FOXTEL.

Well, there is no guarantee another TV of the same model will make any difference. It could be a cheap deinterlacing chip or whatever they use in this model. It is a shame the MySky doesn't do 1080i to 1080p deinterlacing as most freeview decoders do.

One of the big arguments against 1080i broadcasts (and why 720p is superior) is the fact it's relying on the deinterlacer on the TV to do all the hard work. There are a number of ways of deinterlacing video and it's safe to say that the approach taken by most TV manufacturers is going to be the cheapest chip they can find to do the work, vs a TV network that can have deinterlacers that cost many times the cost of your TV.

The other thing you may want to do is try disabling all of the picture enhancement features of the TV. IMHO these typically just make the picture worse.

This UK forum post suggests modern LG TV's are doing motion adaptive deinterlacing which should provide very good results and not what you are experiencing.
