For me, the new Apple TV was the most interesting announcement at the Apple event this morning. Does anybody know if\when Lightbox will have an app for it so that I can watch natively on the device rather than Airplay it from my iPad?

Yes, I hope they are working on an App (can't be that hard can it - TVOS and iOS must be pretty much the same, just need an optimized UI?)

In the same vein, I hope TVNZ, TV3, MaoriTV and Sky have got Devs working on Apps too. FanPass on the AppleTV would be pretty compelling IMO.

They are the same, ATV is an iOS device. So, as the SDK has been released to devs already (or really really soon) Im hopeful it will happen quite quick. iOS has always been first out of the gate, so the ATV version may well just be a copy of the iPad version, and amended to the ATV requirements, rather than a ground up build?

I also hope the FTA ones are added to, as they dont support Airplay. ATV could be the only stream,imng STB we need, and its a Wii type game console as well.
Cheap, and as its teeny, moveable, or "buy two or three" is viable as well.

The biggest downer with the new Apple TV apart from the price is the lack of 4K output to these nice new 4K TVs ..

I too was very disappointed with lack of 4k. Also surprising they don't offer some time of Facetime camera for the ATV too.

4K doesn't bother me at the moment. I don't have a 4K TV, and can't justify the cost based on the minimal benefit at my viewing distance at a screen size I could afford.
Add to that the lack of content - if the compression I see in a lot of streamed HD content is anything to go by I don't have high hopes for streamed 4K, even with my shinny new fiber connection. Just compare a Blu-ray to an HD stream from Netflix or Lightbox!
But having said that, I do wish that Apple included 4K support, so that in a couple of years when my 1080P Plasma dies, and I can buy an 80" 4K screen for $3000, and I have a Gb broadband connection I don't have to buy another set top box. Call it planned obsolescence I guess, but at least they aren't horribly expensive.

Agree with everyone else... Just about every streaming service imaginable has an iOS app. Translate that to ATV4 and you've got the mythical one device to rule them all for streamed content. Lightbox would be a great start, and the FTA channels would be icing on the cake.

I notice only 8 countries will have the Siri remote for new ATV..Australia included but not NZ. Would anyone know if I could purchase one from Aus and with a VPN & US itunes account be able to use it here in NZ? Cheers

When it comes to protected video content, it's not quite as straightforward as tweaking the UI. That said, we want to be on there, and we’re currently looking at options to make this happen so watch this space.

Don't forget Andoid TV, now available on Sony, Sharp and Philips TV's. Nvidia Shield, Nexus, and numerous other set top boxes.

@KieranfromLightbox your competition (Netflix) is on Android TV and Apple TV better make it high priority.

I think the Siri service might not be available, but I highly doubt (as its near impossible) that they would sell the Apple TV with any different hardware in NZ.

If you want to use Siri on the Apple TV, its probably just a matter of having a US or Australian iTunes account and setting it up with the appropriate region. For iTunes and Siri you shouldn't have to do anything else. But to have any pleasure of Hulu or Netflix you would want to set up a DNS geo-unblocker such as Unotelly.

The only problem I envisage is that the NZ Apple TV wont come with the siri remote as they have mentioned two remotes for the ATV4! Might have to go duty free Oz?

Its the same remote as on the Australian site being shown on the page. If it was to be different, I would have thought they would have made sure to show the correct remote..
