The only way I watch Lightbox at the moment is via Chromecast, which is up and running at my new house after some wifi issues at the old house and then living in a motel for nearly a month. So happy to be all caught up on Vikings, carrying on with Orphan Black, and just about to start on Mr Robot.

Wow, I was expecting a couple more questions than that! Anywho, like Andrew above, I only watch Lightbox via Chromecast, and I have been watching it a lot lately, pretty much most days over the past month. The performance is good, no hiccups or buffers in the streams. Every now and then as it switches from one episode to the next it freezes up, and I have to disconnect the Lightbox app from the Chromecast, then reconnect and hit play again. Its not a major, but it happens every day or two.

I have a media pc as well but for any family or friends I just tell them to get a chromecast as its fool proof to use and requires no upkeep

Have done survey, but to expand - using Chromecast on Lightbox (on iOS) to my 2015 Sony TV (Android TV) works perfectly, have never had an issue with it.

Done. Chromecast via an Android phone is the only way we watch it on the TV.

Watching telly on the iPad mini really isn't cutting it lol.

I'd say yes - easy plug & play, HD streaming and is portable. And for that price ($60-ish) it's hard to beat

How 'non-tech' friendly is Chromecast?

I'm trying to advise my father of the best Lightbox setup to use. He has a Samsung Galaxy S Mini phone, a Panasonic TV (no Lightbox app), and a Macbook Pro. Based on this, the Chromecast seems like a pretty good setup on the surface, but are there any usability quirks that us technically inclined folks tend to gloss over?

Thanks. He lives about 3 hours drive away, so tricky setup may be an issue. He's not totally hopeless with tech, but does have some of the struggles that many over 70 have with it.

For instance, I'm still trying to get him to use 1Password as his password manager (replacing a password protected Word doc). But for some reason I can't quite fathom, he just can't get his head around it. :-\

Lightbox works OK with Chromecast ex the app downloaded for my mobile phone, but it seems to lack the control you can get if you use a remote control with a dedicated app. For example, with my Panasonic DMR-PWT550GZ there are dedicated apps for Netflix and Quickflix, but not one for Lightbox. I wonder why this should be the case? With Netflix on the Panasonic 550GZ, you can use the remote control to fast forward and rewind video etc.

I have been told that the new Sony Android TVs don't come loaded with a Lightbox app, even though Netflix and Quickfix are included. So, even with the latest UHD Sony TVs, you don't get an app for Lightbox and I was told that you can't download a Lightbox app to the TV either. Is that correct?

However, it does look like many of the latest Samsung TVs come with a Lightbox app, per this page:

Hey Fred,

Some might argue that the ability to fast-forward / rewind playback on the Chromecast using the Lightbox app is actually more intuitive than using a remote (dragging the progress indicator to where you want it, rather than having to hold a remote button), but I take your point regardless. RE your Panasonic device, am I right in assuming that this is the Blu-Ray player? We haven't verified that Lightbox works on this device, but I assume you've attempted to find and download the app? It won't be pre-loaded.

You are right - we don't currently support either the Android or Sony Apps operating systems, but we are certainly looking at how & when we can do that.

We currently don't support the Samsung JS devices as they run on a different operating system (Tizen) - this requires building another app to support another OS. We are looking at this, but there's nothing in flight at the moment and as such no ETA for Tizen support.
