Hi All

Query for you all, I have no idea and dont want to shell out unnessary money if my end goal wont work.

I currently have a old silver my sky box and have stuff saved on the my sky planner. We are due to upgrade our mysky box soon and am trying to see if there is a way to keep those recordings.

If i purchase a dvd recorder, is it possible to copy across the recordings using realtime to dvd recorder.

If so is it an easy process, is there a particular dvd recorder to buy or will any suffice?

Or am i dreaming and my recordings will be lost

I believe most channels are recorded with copy protection - you'll need to buy hardware to strip this as well.

No HDMI on a silver mySky.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Can't quite see how an HDMI splitter is going to help with copying as no HDMI inputs on recorders. Channels that don't have copy protection (most of them) should copy OK in real time using A/V cables though. Sports and Movies and HD would be the problematic channels.

Probably but unfortunately you won't know without trying. You should be able to find a suitable Recorder on Trademe pretty cheap. It will also work with the upgrade box if you don't have MySky. My Blu Ray Recorder worked fine on my upgrade basic box til we dumped Sky recently. History, Discovery, Living Channels etc aren't copy protected.

I used to copy from the SCART to the VHS, then later to the HDD using component cables. Worked fine.

Back to OT, I think format conversion usually gets rid of copy protection. If that is an issue and you have a computer available, you could get a digitising capture device that lets you plug a composite or s-video signal into a USB port. Once you have the capture file on your computer, you could either keep it there for playback, or convert it to DVD. I haven't done this for a long time, but I seem to recall converting some copy protected VHS tapes using this technique.

Hi Megan,

I have recently upgraded, and done exactly that. I believe any old dvd recorder will do. I used a SCART to S_Video cable to get from the Sky box to the dvd recorder, as it gives better quality than composite (and I have a spare now!). You can only copy in real-time - ie play back the program as normal and set the dvd recorder to record at the same time. Hint: use the Playlist feature to combine multiple programs into one recording. Then you can set up for six hours (say) or programs, and record them overnight. Due to the quality of Sky broadcasts (without HD), don't bother to record with high quality. My dvd machine has XP (1 hour on a dvd), SP (2 hours), LP (4) and EP(6). I use the LP setting normally, and can't see any drop in quality from the original.

The only programs that are copy protected are the ones you pay extra for - PPV, Box Office, etc. I have never ever encountered an issue with this, but I have never paid extra either. Have not tried Trackside.

At any rate, I have never managed to make it work on the new Sky boxes.

usual method is

Yellow red and white RCA into the rear oh the sky decoder, match these to the INPUT on the recorder.

Make sure recorder is connected to your tv, set the recorder to the input you plugged the skybox into.

Turn on the tv and, set to setting for the recorder. If its done right you will see and hear the sky decoder.

MAKE SURE THE SOUND ON THE SKYBOX IS UP FULL

do a test record to make sure it works (follow recorders manual for this but usually easy)

If ok, proceed as needed.

select item to be recorded, press record on recorder, press play on skybox. put remotes down and walk away slowly.
