My father has modded/hacked or whatever his sky box and has things unlocked that usually you would have to pay for. He wont tell me how it is done, does anyone here know somewhere I can find instructions to do this? Im wanting to buy a second hand sky box of ebay or trade me for cheap and watch sky occasionally when I feel like watching TV

Instructions on how to circumvent any protections Sky has in place for paid content is not going to happen here.

All I can say is that, I'm not aware of any 'hacks' or 'mods' to Sky boxes. Also you've not really said what your father does, likely for his reason. What I can say, is that I believe the HD ticket is paying for an HD capable box, as opposed to different encryption. Your father may just be using his Sky card in a non sky approved box?

He has told me it is a modified sky card and a modified box but I cant find any documentation for it anywhere

You won't find anything here. There are plenty of other sites out there that do discuss similar things. Mostly based on European service providers, so may not work here. You will need to get googling.

Even if there was a way to do what you are asking, and no one here would post instructions even if they knew how to do it. The use case you are describing if flat out illegal, and any instructions on how to do it openly posted in GZ forums would bring Sky's lawyers down on Mauricio like a ton of bricks. I would be startled if he didn't delete any such post and ban the posting user as soon as he became aware of it. If for no other reason than to mitigate the risk of him being legally liable. He would be silly to do anything else.

You aren't talking about copyright infringement, or somewhat greyer areas like recording to time and/or device shift legitimately subscribed content at a later time or on another device, bypassing geolocking to subscribe from another vendor, or using a (legitimately subscribed and paid for) Sky card in an HTPC. You are asking for help with straightforward theft of service, which is flat-out illegal. And morally wrong as well IMO.

The simple, and only legal, way to get Sky is to subscribe. If you don't like the cost, there are cheaper alternatives for much of what it offers (Lightbox, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime etc).

Plus, you won't find real second hand sky boxes on Trademe or Ebay. They are the property of Sky and anyone selling/buying them would be dealing in stolen property - which would also attract Sky's lawyers like a cowpat attracts flies. At most you might find something third-party that will accept a (legitimate) Sky card.
