I just got an email from Vodafone saying their "Sky Sport Only" deal through Vodafone TV is ending on 31 August and it can't be renewed. I've been using it for the last 12 months and it has generally been excellent for $39.99 per month. Now I have to buy Sky Starter + Sky Sport for $57.98. I don't need the Starter channels - we never watch them and get most of them through Vodafone TV anyway.

Before I signed up for it a year ago I tried Sky Sports Now which had horrendous frame rate issues. I mainly watch cricket and NRL, and you could visibly see the ball juddering across the screen. Unwatchable.

I've just signed up for another trial of Sky Sports Now expecting that a year on they would have improved and while it's not quite as bad as I remember it, it's still not on par with the stream through Vodafone TV and nowhere near comparable to the satellite feed.

I think I'm particularly sensitive to framerate issues, especially with sports - but I'm shocked more people don't have an issue with the frameframe from Sky Sports Now.

Is satellite the best option at the moment for overall quality?

EDIT:

Just heard from Krish (details in the Sky Deals thread) and I can get Starter, Sports and MySky for $35.75 per month, 1 year contract. Looks like the best option...

Sky Sport Now is a 'good' picture at best, compared to SparkSport for example it definitely looks inferior.

I agree re following a cricket ball, football etc, its poor, especially if you've come from a Sky Satellite option, I'm surprised SKY allow such a mediocre product in the marketplace, unless it's to force people to Sky Boxes, which it likely is.

I had a family member who only has a Sky Box just last month give me their details and I set up Sky GO, which can only be cast to a TV, via a Chromecast, Apple TV etc rather than a specific TV app, and I have found the image quality is better than SkySport Now.

I subscribe to Kayo Sports in AU via a Smart DNS service, but they have now lost Rugby and the A-League I'm reviewing that one.

In my situation and probably many others now, it's a case of subscribing month by month depending on what's on, for instance i have current subs with...

  • Kayo ($25 AUD) - (basically for overseas cricket and NRL, and used to be A-League)

And paused accounts with

  • SparkSport ($19.95) -  (for NZ cricket and cricket in the UK, and English Premier League, which I'll restart when the EPL season begins)
  • Sky Sport Now ($39.95) - (would restart maybe for a month where there are 3-4 ABs's tests, although can now use Sky GO)
  • Optus Sport ($15AUD) - (has the EPL, Champs League and other international football, but would now use Spark Sport given their options)

And depending on what happens with the A-League rights, I may end up subscribing to Paramount who have the rights in AU, and may launch in NZ with the rights or may access via Smart DNS.

I should add I access all of these via an Apple TV 4K and the various streaming services apps.

There are a lot of options now, it's just a matter of figuring out what you want to watch and when.

The marketplace is cheaper than when i paid $100+ a month for SKY, but requires more work!
