From memory, Sky retain ownership, you merely lease and are charged of you cancel and don't return

Imagine this policy would keep them fairly rare in the 2nd hand environment

The decoders are Sky's legal property. Why would people sell things that are simply paperweights without subscriptions and belong to Sky regardless?? The Motorola box could never receive anything.

If you want them for TV or movie props then have someone 3D print one.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Actually I think the old obsolete mpg2 units were sent back to Sky and broken down for ewaste. They won't care if you have one in a cupboard somewhere as most likely they would have billed someone for not returning it.

They won't want it back

I might have a couple of the old remote somewhere around the place. I do recall you could purchase extra ones from Sky

^^ This. Trademe will not accept any listings for Sky boxes or remotes because of this.  I tried to sell a couple of remotes on TM years ago - no go - so I ended up giving them away via GZ just recently.

When sky first came out you had to buy your own decoder.

That only lasted a year or two.

I know lots of people that stopped sky and sky did not want the receivers back as they had moved on to better ones or moved them to satellite.

There are plenty of the modern sky remotes for the blackbox units for sale on trademe for 8-$15.

When Sky bought Prime TV they also offered a deal where you could pay $500 outright for a decoder with no sub just for the Prime TV channel on its own. Mainly for People who couldn't get the UHF broadcasts and Motels etc.

I bet that there are a few motels and hotels out there that still have a cupboard full of legacy Sky mpg2 hardware that once fed distribution systems.

Sky regarded that as an installation/joining fee and retained ownership of the decoder.

I have found these old SKY Decoder listings on trademe, they are sadly closed but am wondering if there is any way to ask the seller if they still have it and if they could relist it??

I was wondering maybe I could ask a question on of their listings asking if it is still available. Are you allowed to do that??

I had an old Pace one at one point, but ended up tossing it in the bin ~5 years ago! I never had a subscription, and had paid a one-off back in the day for a dish and decoder just for access to Prime (this was before it was on Freeview, and if I recall correctly you had to live outside the UHF coverage area, so I'm not sure how many people ended up getting the decoders this way).

Did you try the "ask seller to relist" link?

Yes I did but the listing is to old I think it only works if the listing has been closed for a maximum of 45 days or something
