Its hard to tell, but sky digital seams to be a lot lower quality over the last few weeks.

Its possible that I've just gotten used to the ultra high quality of Freeview HD, but I'm sure that sky was higher quality not that long ago.
The issues I'm getting are huge blocking durring rapid panning or zooming in outdoor enviroments, consistant with mpeg2 at low bitrates.

Has anyone else noticed the same thing, or is it just me?

Depends on ya TV an the decoder i guess too, but yea the Video res an bitrates are pretty low

I haven't noticed. However, live sport broadcasts are good, but the replay of the same broadcast is at much lower quality. I think you are used to the high quality of freeview HD.

I honestly can't tell the difference between the channels that are both on Sky HD and Freeview HD. Is the OP comparing apples with apples? Sure, there are bad quality channels on Sky but they are not also on Freeview. Not all channels on Sky are broadcast in HD.
There are so many variables like your TV, cables etc. that it is hard to make a direct comparison. If the OP is so concerned, why don't they just cancel their Sky subscription?

It's not so much the picture you are receiving, it's your equipment your using. Either cancel subsciption if your not happy or move into the 21st Century and step up to a decent large flat panel TV and MySky HDi, it's excellent viewing and the PVR is great.

Why should you have to pay extra to see a half decent picture ?
Standard Sky is awful

You don't have to pay anything, vote with your wallet if it is not up to your expected standards. Remember, it's a luxury not compulsory.

Actually, MySky HDi is compulsory in our house, FTA programming is terrible, and Sky has the best live HD sport.

I completely agree with Clevedon. If you choose to continue to use outdated technology then you have no grounds for complaining about the picture quality. If you aren't happy with the picture quality then you need to either cancel your sky subscription or upgrade your equipment.

I completely agree with Clevedon. If you choose to continue to use outdated technology then you have no grounds for complaining about the picture quality. If you aren't happy with the picture quality then you need to either cancel your sky subscription or upgrade your equipment.

Cant agree with that statement
Standard Sky looks worse on a flat panel that it does on a CRT

Sky SD decoder output is actually unfit for any flat panel TV, tested over 2 decoders with component to two different LCDs and my study of everyone else i know. Being serious, if you go close up to anything large like 46" it is like having double vision. I cancelled my subscription purely because of the low bitrate and visible macroblocking. Won't have the rubbish service in the house.
