Hello all,

A couple of days ago my Nokia 6265 started playing up. The left-hand side of the screen doesn't show what it's meant to when the phone is 'closed' (the top half has been slid down). It shows a snowy picture (like on an untuned tv). The phone almost always does this, however, sometimes I might get lucky and it doesn't. Also, if left alone for a little while, there is a chance it goes back to it's normal state, but upon pushing any keys it will usually go snowy again. It corrects itself when you slide the top half up.

I was wondering if anybody may know what is wrong (I was thinking of a loose connection or something of the like) and also if I there is any chance I could still be covered under the Consumers' Guarantees Act. The phone is around 20 months old (so a fair while past it's warranty), but seeing as it was an $800 phone I think it should last longer than this. However I don't know if my protection under the Act might have been voided as the phone suffered water damage when it was around 8 months old, but was then fixed, and has been working fine since (for the last 12 months), until now.

Any help or advice on this matter is much appreciated. Thankyou

P.S. Even though I'm newly registered, I have browsed over this forum many times when I have had problems or questions and it has been a great help!!!

Edit: just after posting this, I needed to use my phone, and upon sliding the top half back down, other parts of the screen appear to be doing a similar thing (I think it's spreading), and when I receive a text, the right hand side doesn't appear to change either (it appears to freeze on how it was before sliding it down)

When someone comes into work with a phone doing weird things, I always suspect liquid ingression.  Was your phone repaired or did it fix itself?  There is no guarantee that a liquid damaged phone will work, stay dead or resurrect itself...  Usually repair centres won't even attempt a repair on a 'wet' phone and there is never any repair warranty on it.  If a phone does have repair warranty it is only for 90 days.  If your phone has been wet, kiss it goodbye...

Your flex cable is probably stuffed (worn out)

look at the 3 and 6 keys and if there are wear spots, it's almost certainly the cause.

Send it in but try putting notes to state "replace flex even if liquid damage found"

Thanks for your replies.

mobygeek: I sent the phone into a repair centre to be fixed, where they supposedly did some sort of work on it (cost more than the quoted inspection fee). I assumed that the phone was righted to a good condition as, as I have said, it has been working fine for the last 12 months. I'm not quite sure how bad the water damage was as it appeared to be just the screen that did not work (the backlight came on behind the keys and screen, but the screen was always black) as the phone still made it's usual sounds and whatnot

paradoxsm: the 3 and 6 keys do not appear to have any wear spots on them, and in general, apart from some minor scratches on the casing the phone is in very good condition (well, except from the screen which seems to be having problems when slid down)

So, is it still working?  Usually they don't even bother fixing them as they can't give you a three month repair warranty if it's had liquid in it.  Did they give you repair warranty?  If so, who did it get repaired by?  (Just collecting info to help suss out repairs etc...)

I have just sent in the phone for repairs anyway. The guy at the shop said that he had seen it before, and it's the cable thing that connects to the screen...Apparently it's going to cost $160 (standard charge for an LCD screen problem and apparently is the most that it will cost according to the guy). I will just pay that I guess, I've decided that it's not worth the hassle to argue it, especially since it has had water damage, and since it was worth $800, $160 isn't too bad relatively. Thanks for your input anyway.

Did you tell them to ignore the liquid damage and just replace the cable thing? if not you might get it back with "assessment fee" instead and no parts replaced.

Yes and one could tell them to ignore the water damage and fix it and they could ignore your instructions... and send it back and charge you.  Hey, wait a minute, am I in the wrong business here?  Sounds like I could make a lot of money doing 'nothing'...  (Oops, hope I haven't overstepped the mark here)

If it comes back "assessed liquid damage and assessment fee charged" you just ring the helpline and say "you did not read my notes" and send it right back in for a fix and an assessment fee refund.

I had my projector sent in the other week and it was sent back with a stupid note, obviously the detailed notes DSE had put in explaining the problem and the fixes we had tried were just plain ignored by the tech. I had DSE send it right back in!

Yea, I did tell them that, however, these things do happen, and they are a hassle to sort out. Especially because even if they do fix it the first time round, the minimum time is 10 worknig days! Oh well, hopefully it all gets sorted out, but for now I guess I just have to play the waiting game, a game that nobody ever seems to win at! But there is always a chance...right?

Just got back my phone today, all is well. Turns out it only cost $90 to fix rather than the quoted $160. paradoxsm, you were right in that they did replace the flex cable. They also replaced the whole of the screen housing part, all the casing of the top portion of the phone is new.
