I have an iPad pro, Macbook Air and iPhone SE. I want to replace my iPhone and for the first time I'm enticed by an Android phone. This is because in New Zealand (where I'm from) the Huawei Mate 20 pro is $1026 USD and the iPhone 8 64gb is $752 USD while an iPhone XS 64gb is 1300 USD.

I'm impressed by the Huawei and it's a lot cheaper than if I bought, say, an iPhone XS.

A huge concern of mine is leaving the Apple ecosystem. Is it worth it? Or will I come to regret it? Should I go for the iPhone 8 or 'upgrade' to the Mate 20 pro?

mate 20 pro has great battery life, nice camera etc however you will hate android and Huawei for about a month after changing until you work out it's a bit different to iOS. For SMS have a look a pulse SMS (https://messenger.klinkerapps.com/overview/)

How heavily did you use icloud? Did you purchase a lot of apps on iStore?

These would be my questions. for Me I use a macbook, and still enjoy using an android phone. I'm free to modify the look and feel to what I like.

I use iCloud fairly heavily, I've been looking at different cloud services to compensate for that. Currently I pay for 50gb of storage on iCloud and use files and iCloud drive throughout the university year rather effectively. iCloud is one of the things I'm nervous about replacing so I'm looking at things like Google Drive.

Just read up on excluding apps from power management with Huawei. They do like to kill apps in the background.

But to give you an idea on battery, when i was using my oneplus 6 i would be at about 60% power when leave work (take off charger at 4.30am, finish work around 1.30)

Mate 20 pro is currently at 74% as of right now (13.5 hours after taking off the charge 4.30am - 6pm). Charging it up at night takes about an hour

Google drive and google photo :) google photo has unlimited space depending on settings of photos

It's not worth it if you're already heavily invested in Apple's ecosystem. Getting your devices to play happily together is the key benefit of iCloud. I used an S9+ for 5ish months and found it to be substandard to iOS. Android P might be a bit better but I found I needed to install about 15 addons and hacks to get Android to be useable in the way I'm used to using iOS - and all I mean by that is things like swiping between apps and windows and basic UI enhancements that weren't in Android out of the box but are no brainers (hence they're including some of them in Android P).

Mmm I had thought someone might say that. I'm kind of torn because in part I do want to get the phone to escape the ecosystem. It's $300 USD between the Mate 20 Pro and iPhone XS but I don't think it's justified. Even worse, I don't want to keep mindlessly buying Apple's products when they hike prices based solely on the fact that I have a lot of Apple products already. Sorry, I know it sounds like I'm counteracting helpful responses, but I'm genuinely torn here. On the one hand with enjoying the Apple ecosystem and on the other with being trapped by it, to boil it down simply.

If your already in the apple ecosystem, I'd probably stay there..

The mate 20 pro is an awesome device, but i suspect it could be a bit of a hit to the system for an iphone user.

trying to get my wife out of the apple ecosystem as the mate 20 is about 97% as good as the XS max and less than half the price

I would stick with iOS. The fact that everything syncs up flawlessly without me having to lift a finger is something that I could never escape.

I was in the same boat a few weeks ago coming from an iPhone with several macs - I jumped on the Huawei mate 20 pro when it was announced mainly because of the camera capabilities and because I couldn't justify the extra $500 for the iphone XS, for nearly the same price as the mate 20 pro the XR camera didn't meet my needs and on paper seemed inferior hardware wise.

The Huawei is a brilliant device, I'm really happy with it but definatly has some trade offs... Its not as smooth as ios and I have come across some annoying bugs - they are not deal breakers but coming from a platform such as ios where it "just works" they are noticeable. Android apps don't seem to be as polished by developers either of the same titles but all the apps I use are on both platforms. Google apps are a good replacement for icloud, not quite as convenient or integrated as icloud on your mac but does the job. These are my main negatives with moving over from being an iPhone user, there have been loads of positives as well like the customisation features.

If I had to make the choise again I would still choose the Huawei, its an amazing device that surly will get better with software updates. I should note that I have had experience on android in the past so not a new android user either.

my wife has NEVER used android ... if you can wait i'll report back in a week or so.

but if you haven't got your organs invested in iOS there is no reason not to move to Android, the iphone pricing is getting pretty ridiculous.

i purposedly did not buy any expensive apps on iOS and have not paid a cent to icloud, in fact half the stuff (app) i've bought are either no longer used (superceded by superior apps), no longer updated, some no longer available!

If you want an experience that just works and doesn't make you work for it, stick with iOS and iCloud because it's the only ecosystem that just works. If you're comfortable tinkering to get things working and you're okay with using some hacks here and there to make it work how you want, you'll be OK on Android. But don't expect it to work the way you want out of the box.
