I've got a Sony Ericsson T618 that I am using with a China Mobile SIM card. Several days after setting up my service, the GPRS just stopped working. The little blue triangle above the GSM bars disappeared, and when I checked the "Phone Status" selection, it said that service was normal, but "GPRS Not Allowed." I took it over to China Mobile, and one of the service reps there changed some settings, and it worked again. I took it home, used Bluetooth to connect my laptop, and happily surfed for a little while. The next day, when I woke up, the little blue triangle had disappeared again, and I also noted that there was the "GPRS Not Allowed" message. I took it back to China Mobile, they changed some settings again, and fixed it. While I was at China Mobile, I asked them what was wrong with the phone, and they just said vaguely, "There was something wrong with your phone" (possibly intuiting that my Chinese was not going to be up to a real explanation). Also, since they spent half an hour passing the phone around trying to figure out what was wrong with it, it's possible that they didn't remember all the settings that they'd changed. I don't think that it's a general GPRS outage, as every time I take it over to them, they seem to be able to turn it back on. I took it home, and after being online for about fifteen minutes, I lost the GPRS again. (Sometimes the little blue triangle is completely missing, and sometimes it just appears as an outline.)

I tried re-setting the data communications to "GSM" from "GPRS and GSM", turning it off, turning it on again, then changing it back from "GSM" to "GPRS and GSM", turning it off, and then turning it on again, as recommended in the Sony Ericsson knowledge base, but this did not solve the problem.

I'd like to try to figure out how to fix the GPRS myself... Does anyone know what settings might be wrong?

Thanks,

Liberty

Try pulling the battery out, then putting the battery back in again.
If this fixes it, it might need a firmware upgrade, the first version of the T616 firmware was very buggy :(
Do this from the main screen:

> * < < * < *

Where > right on joystick, < left on joystick.

Then when the Service Menu pops up, go into Service Info->SW information.
Post the first and second line here.

I can't think of any other reason that GPRS would suddenly stop working, if it's enabled on your service then it should just work, regardless of phone settings. It's you're in an area where there's a GPRS fault, I've had that before. When I left Vodafone know they rebooted a cellsite and it fixed the problem. I was getting a different error message to you though.

Tim,

Thanks very much for your response. I just realized that I posted last night in re: to T616 when I meant T618, I was reading a lot about the T616 on the Sony Ericsson website. I think these models are just for different markets, though.

I tried taking out the battery and putting it back in again, but unfortunately, this did not seem to fix it.

I followed your instructions, and these are the first and second lines that I get:

R6C005 prgCXC12-5582_CHINA_1

R6C005 prgCXC12-5597_TAE_CHINA_1

Thanks very much for your help!

Best,

Ahh, well a T618 is basically a T610 (same 3 GSM networks support) so I'm really not sure what the problem is. You have the latest and greatest firmware on the phone, so I'm at a loss to explain what it is they're doing at China Mobile, there really isn't that many settings you can change to make GPRS work on a T61x series phone.

Rereading your post, I'm a little confused, are you in New Zealand or roaming in China? Do you have a Vodafone NZ SIM card in your phone, or something else?

Talking to someone I know who's good with GSM network stuff, he tells me that China has a lot of restrictions on GPRS/TXT etc and that only certain number ranges are allowed access to certain things. That still doesn't explain how they're able to make it work again at Chinda Mobile though.

Let me write that a little more clearly: I'm in China, bought the phone in China, and am running it on a China Mobile SIM card.

The times that I've been able to get online via GPRS, Bluetooth, and my laptop, I've found that I haven't had pages blocked, unlike when I go to the Internet cafes, where it seems that two-thirds of the webpages that I try to access are blocked. Also, the GPRS connection seems to run a lot faster at accessing pages outside of China than the Internet cafe connections do (sometimes, it takes about five minutes a page to load each page of Yahoo! e-mail, which doesn't have a lot of graphics, using an Internet cafe connection).

I went back to China Mobile to ask them to fix the GPRS on my T618 again. They told me that I should type in the code *100*555*70# into the cellphone. This will send a message to China Mobile telling them to turn off the GPRS on the phone. A text message from China Mobile will then appear stating that they've turned off the GPRS. Then, turn off the cellphone. Then, turn the cellphone back on, and type the code *100*555*71# into the cellphone. This will send a message to China Mobile telling them to turn the GPRS back on. A text message from China Mobile will appear stating that they've turned the GPRS back on. Then, turn the cellphone off, and then turn it back on again. The GPRS should then work. This seemed to work while in their office, but the GPRS hasn't shut itself off again, so I haven't had a chance to test it in "real life".

I hope that this will help anyone else who is having difficulty with China Mobile GPRS.

Best,

Liberty

Cokemaster have you visitied ChinaMobile and checked that your account allows GPRS? Also, please start a new thread since the previous problem was solved and yours is a new one.
