I have the same phone and had this problem, solved it by topping up. Worked a charm once I had money on my account. Weird eh? Prepaid on XT

I also suggest downloading http://www.google.com/mobile/products/maps.html#p=default as it's much better than Nokia Maps in my opinion

Upgrade the version of Maps to 3.0 first and foremost.

Are you using the phone in online mode or offline mode?

Make sure your outside in a clear space, doesn't work well inside or closed in areas.

Assisted GPS does use data but it is very minimal.

The latest version of firmware for the 5800 is V30.0.011

As mentioned, if you aren't using assisted GPS then you will need to be outside in an open sky area. There is no need to purchase anything to get Nokia Maps working.

The steps I would follow are:

Update your handsets firmware (using Nokia Software Updater)
Update your version of Maps to Maps 3.0 ( http://europe.nokia.com/explore-services/maps/download-maps )
Use Map Loader 3.0 to update the maps data.

Once you've done all these, if you don't want to use data, go outside and walk around for 5 minutes. You should get a fix.

Remember - to check your software/firmware version: go to the dialer keypad and dial *#0000#

It'll list all of the necessary info about your phone and then from options you can choose to check for updates.

as at today - there are no updates.

I have Maps 3.0 and v21.0.25 firmware on mine and the first time i used the GPS (non assisted as XT doesn't support it) it took about 15mins to get a satellite fix. Now it only takes about 30secs.
You should have a little satellite meter flashing in the lower RH corner. One yellow bar flashes while it searches, then green bars add in as it finds satellites
