I don't think handset prices will come down simply because manufacturers use Linux. For that to happen they need scale.

Motorola is already selling Linux-based handsets (A680) and AFAIK they're not cheaper than other smartphones competitors make. This is because there are already lots of development on Symbian and Windows Mobile handsets, while Linux ones still need to follow the trail.

Whats next.....TV Remote

More of a joke really, but on the p9xx you can download software that allows you to make it do that... fairly pointless but its quite amusing in a sick twisted way.

speculation of course -

1. World phone - GSM/CDMA then later on GPRS/UMTS/CDMA
2. Software radio - all RF can be tuned through software this means a phone could function across 800/900/1.8/1.9/2.4 networks
3. VOIP over mobile
4. Downloadable themes - skin your phone over the air including all ringtones, etc (could be a StarTrek theme)
5. Multiplayer interactive gaming globally on mobile
6. 4G networks - download speeds up to 100Mbps
7. Presence technology - I know Voda are working on this
8. Location Based Services
9. Person to person payment

I think its like (insert your favorite IM client) MSN messengers statuses. ie. I'm in a call, I'm busy, I'm asleep, I'm in an orgy/meeting, I'm ready to be flooded with P2T messages etc.

cokemaster: Have you got SmartMovie going on your P910 yet? I have reencoded Meet The Fockers down to 100meg, put it on the MemoryCard and now have something to watch (you'll be amazed at the quality) while on the bus.

Back on topic, while converged devices are a great thing, you'll never get the same quality out of them as you do a dedicated device. I've seen pictures taken with the V800 which has a 1.3MP camera, but they're still pretty poor quality images. They don't have a decent lense.

I love my P910, but it's not about to replace my iPod or my proper digital camera.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

No, I haven't, yet. I still have the stock 32mb memory stick that comes with the handset. Its been quite full of mostly apps which aren't that important so its only got 0.3mb left and I have about 40mb on the handset left.

It's the ENUM stuff. Will end up with unique identifiers that allow you to control all your IP and telephone devices in one place. All a bit arcane right now but will have a pretty profound effect once it roles out. Trilas already taken place in Europe and planned for NZ.
