So for the last month or so I have been using a Sony Ericsson c510 on Telecom XT with relatively few hitches.
(And by that I mean little forgivable nuances in the device such as occasional network drop-out for 30 seconds or so when I know there is coverage)

But this morning I woke up and the thing has just completely lost it!

First - The alarm didn't go off as it usually does (good thing flat-mate is noisy or I would have slept through my 8am lecture... )

Second - The battery now will not charge. An error pops up saying: "please use a genuine Sony Ericcson battery". It is. I have been charging this phone the same way for the last 3-4 weeks!

Thirdly - The Sim card is completely rejected. No coverage is picked up, no calls can be made.

I've restarted and taken the battery and sim out at least 3 times and it has made no difference.

I am VERY curious as to whether this has something to do with 2degrees... but that doesn't realy explain the charging failure!?

GAARGH - someone get me a Nokia!

Frustrated...

Ben

Have you taken the phone to a Telecom store or dealer to be sent away for repair?

All of the issues you outlined can be fixed. I highly suspect you're running the original firmware version that shipped with these phones, too.

Yes - I took the phone in as soon it happened!
No - I updated the firmware soon after I got the phone - Can't remember the exact rev. number, but I do know that I couldn't even back it up to my PC after the fault occurred.

Since nobody else has picked up on it, I will...

What in the world would 2degrees have anything to do with a handset problem you're having that was bought from Telecom and is being used on the XT network??!!

Your phone is poked. Get it fixed or replaced. A new mobile network in the country, that you're not using, has nothing to do with this.

I would never touch another Sony Ericsson phone. After the second replacement died, i gave up and bought a Nokia. Not much good to you (technically) i know, just fyi for future purchases.

to turn back the alarm on - you will need to go to menu then alarm and press "turn on"

i have the phone for 3 weeks now - not a major problem except the OS suddenly freeze -- looks like it has a bug or something --

the battery life is very very short on this one -- I would suggest get the nokia - however the nokia phones have slow data speed compare to Sony Ericsson..

Hah. Thanks guys - when the phone first died the first thing that I noticed was the network issue.

Now I know that when XT launched there was an issue with it interfering with vodafone, so I put two and 2 together and jumped to a possible conclusion that since the fault coincided with the 2degrees launch, maybe it had something to do with it?!?

But when I realised the battery issue was also present, I assumed it was merely the phone and took into the store who have sent it to be repaired.

Yes - I have learnt. It's My first Sony-Ericsson and now I'm heading fast back to Nokia.

Firstly, it definitely sounds like a fault with the phone rather than a network issue. Take it into a store to have it sent away to be repaired again. What notes did the tech write when the phone was sent back to you?

As for the battery issue, go into the menu > messaging > email > settings and ensure that "check interval" is turned off. Sometimes this is set to 5 mins with means the phone is polling for new email every 5 mins which will dramatically drain the battery life.

Sony Ericssons are imo really good phones, just sounds like you have had an unfortunate experience so far.

Ok you are mistaken on a few things.

1) The phone is still away for repair/diagnosis. It has not been sent back to me yet - I am expecting it later this week.

2) I have never used the email function on the phone. The battery was draining naturally from calls, internet usage, camera usage, applications etc. I have no reason to suspect abnormal drainage.

Yes an unfortunate experience, but it seems like many others have also had an 'unfortunate experience' too. I don't dispute that it is a nice phone, but sometimes it's too easy to get caught up on nice features and then it turns into more of an 'object of obsession' than just a plain old cellphone.

Ok cool. Sorry about that.

In regards to the repair, it should just be a simple software fix.

The email setting does not make a difference whether you have set up email on the phone before or ever used it. It will still attempt to check every 5 mins so still worthwhile checking out.

Cheers
