Hi peeps . im a newbie and dont fully know much about mobile phone internal stuff . but wondering can this Nokia 2280 Telecom mobile phone be changed to Vodafone network since it has a Sim card slot at the back.. Already tryed putting my Sim card {vodafone} into it. The phone did a quick search roaming but just went to the exsisting Telecom Network. I know phones can be unlocked stuff like that .but can this be changed if so this will be a good way to change networks using this mobile phone .. Cheers

Hello Synbad, and welcome. Sorry, but this phone works on CDMA networks only, and will not roam on Vodafone's network.

Thanks . I was searchin on the net and that was the only conlusion i had to face . was the gsm vs cdma.. so these cdma phones that has a sim card slot ? they now use sim card? (option)

RUIM cards are to CDMA what SIM cards are for GSM...

Thanks for the replys . what are the rum cards for ? I guess you cant reset these Telecom Phones with out using the Network Company for access unlike the easy gsm ones.. Cheers

the card slot on the back of the 2280 is definitely a SIM card slot and not a ruim. if you read the manual that comes with your phone, it clearly marks it as a sim card slot, along with the warning to not put any sim cards in the slot :-) my guess is they used a case built for a GSM phone, but put a CDMA inside it. The 2280 does not support ruim.

The slot on the back of the 2280 is indeed for a CDMA RUIM card. The 2280 chasis is particular to CDMA and is not a GSM crossbreed.

At most levels SIM and RUIM are identical but there are some major differences. Phyiscally both the slot and the card look the same. But do work inherently differently at a sw level.

RUIM cards will work in a GSM SIM Slot where as a GSM SIM card will not work in a CDMA RUIM slot.

tis interesting. I stil have a manual on my desk.
Page 10 shows "SIM card slot" and an arrow pointing to a diagram, as well as a warning not to put anything in there.

The manual suffers from a GSM influence - and from a Customers perspective they are the same so most will refer to them as a SIM.
Architecturally though they are different.

No ....GSM use SIM only

a practical scenario of the interchange would be if you travel to a GSM destination and swap your CDMA RUIM into a GSM sim slot you can use the GSM phone with your CDMA roaming profile - this requires inter-network and protocol roaming between the CDMA & GSM carriers

I'm a little confused now.
your saying a RUIM can operate in a SIM card slot. so you mean in a GSM phone?

are you saying that GSM network can use RUIM, but currently they are not?

Sorry - I had an idea when I typed that last email it might get you all confused.

In GSM they use the SIM specification as their standard. SIM has been around for years and is specifically for GSM. GSM do not use RUIM as it doesn;t have the same functionality nor has been included in their standards.

RUIM is a recent CDMA standard that has been designed for use in CDMA phones - its functionality duplicates that of a SIM but it is specifically built for CDMA phones. In designing the RUIM standard they made it compatible with a GSM phone such that a RUIM card can be inserted into a SIM slot. This allows the GSM phone to assume the CDMA profile and if all the backend work has been done also work on the GSM network ...ie:

(hyperthetical)
You have a 027 CDMA phone and travel to Croatia whom only have GSM but have a cross protocol roaming agreement with Telecom.
You put your 027 RUIM card into a GSM loan phone and it assumes your CDMA 027 number on the GSM network. That way you can make and recive calls whilst in Croatia on your home mobile number.

The reverse scenario doesn't apply.

To make the conversation a bit more complex...there are now phones available that have both CDMA and GSM built in...no idea when these are ever going to get here.

the nokia 2280 is on both telecom nz and vodafone nz. can the telecom version not be unlocked to run a vodafone sim card? how can the same phone be locked into either gsm or cdma only?
explain to th newbie. cheers guys :)

I don't think the 2280 is on Vfone NZ... are you sure?

and if it is, it will be a GSM phone, which is completely different.
They use a different protocols and even different frequencies.
Dual protocol phones do exist, but not the 2280.

The answer to your question, is no.

The 2280 is CDMA only
There is a couple of similar looking GSM phones (3315) that you may be mistaking for a 2280.

The 2280 cant/wont work on GSM - it doesnt have the correct technology in it to even connect on a GSM network.
