I would like to access my DIAL-UP isp, just for short periods, ON MY LAPTOP occasionally (like a couple of times per year!)when I am away from home. Not frequently enough to warrant any other possibly expensive method. The details are below.
I cannot yet do it ,and would be pleased if someone has achieved this,
The Orange salesperson told me I could, and I paid as much for the cable as the phone!

USING: Windows XP SP2 Operating System
NOKIA mobile phone, model 3105
Data cable I use is genuine DKU-5 (using the Nokia driver)
The phone reports 'Ready for data' when connected.

Device Manager reports:
'Multi-port serial adapter as Nokia Connectivity adapter cable DKU-5'
(only when the cable is attached)

The modem shows as 'Nokia CDMA 1xRTT Data Fax Modem'
(even when the phone is NOT connected to the cable) but does not respond to dial-up request from computer. When i try to 'diagnose' the activity just 'hangs'. Can't see any IRQ conflicts.

(BTW, I have installed Nokia PC Suite ver 6.6.16, BUT on Nokia's advice, I DO NOT USE it and have unchecked 'connection boxes',so it is not conflicting.
BTW it would be nice, Nokia, if I COULD use that to establish a dial-up connection).

Neither Orange, Nokia or TPG (my ISP) have been able to help me get this working.

PLEASE Is there anyone out there who has achieved this? Help!

Its very unusual to be doing what you ask (and im not sure if your network supports it)

It will work out to be a similar cost, better speeds, and easier connection to use packet data. Check to see if you have a 'casual data' plan or something similar (i.e. what is the cost per megabyte when you dont pay extra for a data plan? In NZ its $8MB which is fine for about 10 megs a year and thats it...)

My Dialup plan is 'Casual', I pay $1.50/hour only when in use (which is seldom!).

You suggest packet plan. Who supplies a 'packet' system - the phone company (Orange in my case) or my ISP?
I will check both. Maybe I'm doing this the wrong way! It just seemed logical to me that, since the phone can be used as a modem, it would be dead easy!
I am most grateful for your response. I'll check further with my ISP and with orange for another solution. Any more comments would be appreciated.

Packet Data is the name for GPRS or CDMA data. When using this plan you will connect to the Internet through your operator's network, not the ISP.

Even though you're connected through your operator's mobile network, you'll be probably able to access your email, just as easily - and faster: CSD (dialup) is only 9.6kbps, while GPRS is 42kbps, CDMA 1xRTT will be probably about 80kbps and so on.

You have the right modem driver installed for CSD (Circuit Switched Data - ie: direct dial to a phone number), but to clarify a few other points.

1) When connected phone reports Ready for Data, does this then disappear, or does another message appear saying 'disconnected'.
2) You mentioned you were able to turn the phone off, then back on, and it connected ok, but subsequently disconnected you. Did it complete a connection including verifying the username & password, then die, or did it fail part way through?

If it fails part way through two other options to pursue are:
1) Is CSD enabled on your mobile number. There's two levels they can check, one is the main system, the other is at the network level itself.
2) Is the phone number you're dialing able to accept cellphone calls? ie: In NZ 0867 numbers which the ISP's use are technically a freecall number. Quite a few ISP's wont' accept cellphone calls to these numbers. The quick test is to dial the number from the handset, if you hear a modem that's not your problem. If you hear a message to the effect of 'you are calling from a disallowed area, etc.etc.), then ring your ISP and ask if they have another number for customers using cellphones.

That said, the packet data option is usually a better answer in the long run, and a whole lot faster too. :) Just don't forget to install the 3g packet modem driver if you decide to go down that path as you're existing installed modem driver is for CSD only, not packet.

I can't tell you how pleased i am to get some help!
Firstly I should clarify that when i connect the Nokia to the PC via the USB cable, the phone reports 'Ready for Data'.Just getting that far was great!
next, using WinXP Network Connections, I established the dialup with the Nokia as the modem.
Now i initiate a dialup session and the phone displays:
'Connecting to (the correct local dialup phone number)
after about 5 seconds, the phone display changes to ' Send >>>>>
and under that 'Receive>>>>
in about 10 seconds the display says Data call ended.
I have tried adding a number of commas before the phone number and it does seem to hold on to the line about 10 seconds longer, but still drops out. (i read somewhere to try that, incase it was dropping out before the handshake was complete - which is what it seems to be doing.
I just tried using my home landline with the PC internal mopdem (same configurastion but different modem!0 and it works as expected. But still no joy with the Nokia phone/modem!
I slowed down the data rate to 9,600bps with no result.
I thought the log from ctrl panel /modems/diagnostics might give a clue to someone with more knowledge than me:

That modem log doesn't look complete. It's missing the section where it tries to dial out (ATD or ATDT).

Putting comma's into the dial string won't benefit at all, the phone doesn't recognise them as pauses in the dial string, so if you've got any in there at the moment take them out.

Also check into the other options I suggested, having them check if circuit switched data is enabled on the network, and if the number you're dialing will accept cellphone calls (dial it as a voice call and see if you hear a modem or not).

mmm. Sorry i didn't answer some of your questions. Replying is a bit awkward when you can't see the post you are replying to! So I've solved that ,by cutting and pasting to Notepad which I can see, though minimised!
Well, pehaps that was a truncated log file. I'll append the latest one in full.
I am still trying to establish if orange are CSD enabled! I could not get any technical help last call (admittedly at night) so I'll try again today.
I tried your suggestion and called the ISP with my mobile, and got the familiar modem handshake noises.
I also phoned the ISP who said they THINK it should work, using a mobile. hmmm
Doesn't anyone do this 'cept me? You will see from the log, that I have never reached the username bit, yet!
Orange told me they 'don't do the GSM or packet thing', "we only have CDMA". And their WAP system is useless for my purposes.
For me to use the 'packet data' system you suggest, would I have to change phones and phone network providers? That doesn't appeal, but.....
Heck, when Ibought the phone and cable, the salesman assured me it would work. She and her male helper no longer work at that branch and NOBODY has got any idea of what I am on about!.

That's an old log I have from a samsung connecting to CDMA. Your's doesn't actually seem to be getting to the dialing stage.. (last 7 lines)

With regard to the using packet data, no, normally same phone, same network, just different charging (and a whole lot faster).
The phone number is normally #777
with a username & password.

I've just looked it up and the Telstra one is normally:
Username: user@telstra.xstream
Password: telstra

In NZ we use
Username: mobile@jamamobile
Password: telecom

Orange will presumably have their own username and password for packet (/3g/cdma, etc,etc) data. However you'll need to install the other Nokia modem driver aswell. It's listed as a Nokia 3g Packet Data Modem when you're in the wizard. The different drivers initialise the modem for CSD or Packet Data.

Anyone from Oz have any ideas Re: Orange CDMA username/pass ? Their website does seem to be rather lacking.

Have just had email from orange which includes this text:

"Orange mobile is seen as a basic mobile service for making & receiving calls, as well as basic value added services.

A few features that Orange does not have the intention of supporting are features such as:

Fax and data (internet dial up)
Blue tooth
Infrared
MMS

If you require some of these features as part of your mobile service, you may be interested in our sister product - 3 mobile - that has these, plus so much more that exceed mobile technology standards across the industry."

Also just spoken to them (again) and they confirmed 'they are prepared to release me early from my contract', cos they can't support anything with this phone. BUT if I change to another G3 phone, and pay double the monthly payment, they can do wonderful things. hell, for the little I had hoped to do, I think I just give up! What a waste of $90 on a USB cable.
I am thinking they should refund my money on that! maybe .....

Are you suggesting that, despite what they said, I should be able somehow to access the G3 packet data sytem using this phone, with only a different driver. But a Username and Password? But the latter is impossible, surely without they issue it?

And here's the Wndows dialogue box report: :Error 678: The remote computer did not respond" etc. Obviously not getting far into the Orange network!
It's hopeless! I tried a friend's dialup with the same reponse.
Please don't waste your time any more, grateful as i am. looks like a fizzer. So much for the Nokia and Orange websites !

Hrm, ok, based on that reply to you it certainly does sound like a no frills system. I don't know enough about orange otherwise, but I'd have to agree with you that it looks like a no go.
