Been thinking about getting an iphone 4, but should i go on a plan or get pre pay?

I did a quick spreadsheet on it

Basicly calculated with costs over 24months, and the prepay with the 100mb data plan, with txt 2000

What im not sure about is can you stick addons onto plans, say txt2000 onto the $40 a month plan?, when i go into vodafone next ill ask, but if i can get an answer before hand, that would be great

Data, how much do you use on average a month, is 100mb enough, atm i have an oldschool nokia, doesnt even have a camera so its hard to say, but when i used the girlfriends iphone 3g at work, would just surf webpages and a few apps, but can see me doing more than that if i owned one myself

With Facetime, ive read you can do it via WiFi, but lets say you couldnt how is that data managed, via your monthly data allowance or is it charged like a phonecall with a fee per minute?

Like i said if i can get an answer before heading into a Vodafone shop that would be a bonus

Have a look at the spreadsheet in http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=76&topicid=65204
The online version has been set-up based on an expected monthly pre-pay cost of $20, i.e. exactly your situation. Given this, your cheapest option (for both 16GB & 32GB) is to:

 - Sign up to an iPhone 40 plan
 - Cancel after 12 months (and pay the associated early termination charge)
 - Transfer to pre-pay for the next 12 months at your $20 a month.

However, the differences are pretty negligible. Also, given you want 100mb and 2500 texts, if/when you do go on pre-pay, XT would be a better option.

 - TXT2500 - $12
 - Data 120mb - $12

After accounting for top-up discounts offered by XT, the effective cost is on or less than around $20 (less if topping up in $60 pops) and you get 20% more data and 25% more texts (and they are to all networks).

Just my 2c.

1) I don't think you can get the txt add-on with the iphone plan. (can someone confirm this?)

2) I don't think 100MB is enough. I've gone through 100+ MB already in my first week with just web browsing and some app downloading. Lucky the 3GB bonus is in place this month, I'm going to have to be more careful next month.

3) As said you can't use facetime over 3G (at least not without jailbreaking).

well had a chat with vodafone, the iphone plans you cant stick add ons onto, and cant change the plan, they are different to the on account plans, which you can put add ons onto, with an on account plan you you would only get $100 off the cost of the handset compaired to $500

with the iphone plan you get 1000 txts, and 3gb of data until the 1st of september, then it revert back to 300txts and 250mb of data, that deal isnt long enought to be a deal breaker for me

looks like the cheapest option for me would be to buy the phone outright and go onto XT as i send around 1000+ txts a month being 1300 + 576 (addons over 2years) = 1876
