We are trying to setup the Sim card to connect via an external dyanlink modem which goes into a large box with GSM written on it.
This obviously also controls a number of things like a burglar alarm for one.
It seems like everything is setup and it dials to *99#, Vodaphone say this is correct but have been very unhelpful so far and then this morning they said can you ring back tomorrow morning as our system is being upgraded and we can't help.
It dials then just sits.... does not connect.
The modem has been reinstalled due to it not responding and was not working correctly, it is now we turned off the video camera's as it was using the same port as one of the video ones.
We are not quite sure what else we may need to put in as far as settings go.
Any ideas anyone?? Woudl be apreciated as have to go back tomorrow morn.
This is on a big flash launch, interesting setup.. not mine obviously :)

*99# dials the GPRS network not the GSM network make sure the modem supports GPRS or you are going to get no where.

If the modem supports GPRS get back

I have spoken to Dlink and got a huge run around and the gist of it is they dont' make any modems that will support GPRS.
Is that what is needed to get thsi up and running??

have spoken to local Telephone house and they have a good solution so may have to go with that, lucky the guy has plenty of money as they aren't cheap.
The guy was a lot more helpful than Vodafone thats for sure, and he's a vodafone agent .

You are asking a bit much of a call centre to be able to tell over the phone if a modem supports GPRS you would check the device specs on the website of the company that made it.

What I was meaning was the help I received from Vodafone was not helpful, the first couple of calls were just basic dial up help, then they passed me over to someone else and now the system is down till tomorrow lunch time anyway. I din't even know about the modem until you pointed it out, thank you for that I have learnt something today.
The technical support guy I spoke to asking about Gprs modems put me through to someone else who put me through to someone else and basically didn't know.
I am sure if I had gone into a shop they would be very helpful.

If you look on ebay there are a lot of Wavecom modems around these days, these are an external GSM/GPRS modem with an RS232 port on them. I've picked up a couple of non GPRS modems for A$25 lately from Australia and there have been a lot of GPRS capable models going for around 50-60 euros, you're probably looking at 20 euros to get one posted to NZ. A similair model new in NZ will cost you around $500.

Thanks for that I can purchase Brand new Dynalink I have just found for about $325 + Gst but will keep researching, so Long as I get it sorted for the guy to use his boat by the 23rd.
Forgot I could look on trademe, will do that too

I was going to suggest Dynalink, but couldn't post before (I was on the street). I had this Dynalink GPRS modem in mind.

That is exactly the one I have been looking at and also a bonus my suppliers have it in stock so an added bonus.

This is just in case anyone may be interested.
The setup on the Boat was using an Ericsson Module GM12
The burglar alarm and telephone were both plugged into it and they were also trying to get the Dlink modem to dial up through it also all using the same Sim card. It seemed a bit flakey tho as the phone kept stopping at times, possibly with the Burglar alarm trying to dial out to the network.... So probably would have been a reliable connection at all.

Anyway the owner of the Boat has said go ahead with the new Dynalink modem as we since found out he has 2 Sim cards for the Boat, 1 prepaid and the other with Account which can be used for the internet etc.
So problem solved but what a long way round it all.
