A while back I asked a professional photographer some advice on street photography. Before giving me two cents he laughed and said there's no street photography in Auckland.

What he meant by this is our small metropolitan area, relatively small population base and density makes it difficult to get the kind of street scenes you'd see in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Istanbul, Hong Kong, etc

I took a look online for any Auckland street photography sites or blogs, I found a couple of discontinued blogs about street fashion in Auckland . It's not exactly what I like to snap when I'm out and about and frankly with my sense of style it would be pretty hypocritical to be writing about what's in and what's not.

I've been taking a few photos with my Olympus OM-D E-M5 and sticking it on a Tumblr (www.aucklandia.com) . It's nothing fancy just me learning the ropes of photography and taking photos on the street. I realise New Zealand is pretty small and landscape photography is a lot easier for some than street photography, but I love being able to tell stories about the city I live in through the people walking on its streets.

Time is the new currency, and buddy I'm poor.

I have to force myself to find a couple of hours each week to shoot. It's hard with work and trying to keep a semblance of a social life. I'm hoping having a day set aside with a small group would encourage regular photo taking.

Good photos, thanks for sharing. I guess it would be harder to find that shot in Auckland but if you keep at it you will find it!

Those are pretty phat.

Never had the balls to in-yer-face shoot random people myself, in the fear my expensive gear might end up being used as a weapon against me or on the ground smashed :)

So do the next best thing and shoot munted buildings etc (chrsitchurch)

Did do my first impromptu model shoot last weekend though, that was fun.

Remember, if you're in public on public property, security guards and/or police CANT STOP YOU from taking photos!

If security guards try to tell you to stop taking photos, you can tell them to bugger off!

Well done, I'm really enjoying your people shots. I know how hard it is to get this right, it requires a lot of patience and seeing stuff that looks ordinary to others.
I particularly like the patchwork man shot.

You can take street photographs anywhere really. The bigger cities overseas do have a more diverse range of people, but there's much to be photographed here as well.

By the way I found the Wellington daily shots quite boring in comparison (and speaking as a Wellingtonian).

Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all...

Some great work there, 'Dear Diary' would be my favourite.

Threads like this are also a good reminder and inspiration that I need to make the time more often to get the camera out and get creative.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Hi

I do street photography here in the UK. I don't live in London, but where ever you go there is always something to shoot. Sometimes you have to find it, other times it's right in front of you. I'm sure there is plenty happening in central Auckland, Lunchtimes is always good.

Hi geeks,

I noticed this topic has already been discussed a couple of years ago and though it might be time to revive this post.

After I moved to Auckland I started doing some street photography on weekends. Mainly to get myself away from the computer for a while and also to explore my new neighbourhood. I liked the results and decided to upload one photo each day aucklove.com (always happy for feedback).

While out on my picture hunts, I bump every now in then into other people taking photos - mostly tourists though. Since street photography has become so popular thanks to Instagram etc. I was wondering if the situation has changed since this post started. Are there any other street photographers around?

Would love to see some other street photography websites or maybe even meet up with some street photographers and go for a picture hunt together.

Who else is a street photography geek?

There are limits (e.g. decency) as a recently convicted creep found out.

I was thinking if you want to capture life in Auckland, just photograph congested traffic .

That's the overriding impression I'm always left with when I visit.

Thanks for sharing the article, very interesting. I am always very careful when I take photos on the beach. I either try to avoid taking photos of people in beach wear, or if, I make sure they are far away in the distance and not the main subject of the photo. Taking close-up photos of random girls in bikinis is a bit creepy ...

Well yeah, there is heaps of congested traffic in Auckland but this city has much more to offer than just that :)
