Hi all,

I will thank you all in advance for being so helpful with my little problem here!

I am located in Nelson and we have just lost our non digital TV signal here. I am looking for the easiest way to be able to view freeview + the sky channel being watched in the lounge in our bedroom.

We have a sky in the lounge so therefore already have a satellite but currently the only place we have an aerial point is in the lounge.

Once I know what to do and what I need I am relatively confident that I can do it all myself as sky wanted $160 just to split the sky into the bedroom.

Is there a way that I can have the satellite running into the bedroom as well as the signal split from sky? I am sure in some newer houses this all comes thorough one aerial/cable in the wall.

I'm open to suggestions and thanks in advance for your time.

Can you receive Freeview UHF signal? Or are you in a satellite area?

If UHF, do you have an aerial? Where does the cable for this come out?

Did you have analog reception in the bedroom already?

Does the bedroom TV have inbuilt freeview? or will you be using a set-top box?

Splitting the feed from the satellite to go to the bedroom is no problem, and with a freeview decoder you will be able to get all the freeview channels no problem,

However, getting the currently tuned sky channel to the bedroom would be a PITA , It would require you to run a RF cable from the back of the Sky TV decoder to the bedroom, you would then have the sky channel tuned as an analogue channel while the Freeview STB was connected via AV leads..

Not impossible, but would require a bit of cable running,

Wellygary this sounds like what needs to be done. Distance wise we are not in a big place so hopefully the cable running wont be too troublesome!

Any ideas on what I would require to complete this? Will the set up be the same if we upgrade to mysky? I believe there is also some sort of modulator involved then? We were thinking about getting mysky so would hate to have to change it again if we do.

Trig42: We do have a UHF aerial as well. This is also only wired into the lounge as well though. As the sky satellite is mounted to the house right outside our bedroom window I thought it would be easier to hook up to this? We currently will need a freeview set top box. My parents have one lying around so I can use this for now. We are getting a new TV shortly which will have built in free view anyway.

Currently we have no aerial point in the bedroom at all. We were previously using bunny ears. But i figure if I am going to have to do some work anyway may as well get the sky split sorted as well.

Sorry for the confusion guys, as you can see there are still some decisions regarding tv's and mysky that the boss has to make a decision on. hope this doesn't effect your advice to much!

Remember that satellite freeview and terrestial freeview require different decoders. New tv's have built-in terrestial decoders so cannot just be hooked straight up to a sky dish.

Also, if you want HD, it is only available via terrestial. If you are going to use the satellite dish, you will need a freeview satellite set-top box. Do you know whether the set-top box you have available is satellite or terrestial? That could determine whether you can use your sky dish.

If you are going to use a new tv in the future with built-in freeview, it might be best to connect to a UHF aerial now rather than later.

I don't imagine it will be much more work to connect to the UHF aerial, it's a little further away so may mean a bit more cable but may as well do this now rather than later.

Can you run a cable from your lounge (where the UHF comes in) to your bedroom?

If so, you can run an RF cable out the back of your Sky decoder (if you have a MySky you will need a modulator to do this), combine it with the signal from you uhf aerial (I think you could just use a splitter in reverse?) and run one cable from there to your bedroom. That way you will have UHF freeview available on a digital tuner, and using the analog tuner of the TV you will be able to tune into whatever channel your sky decoder is set to.

Trig42, that sounds perfect. Pretty much what I had in my head apart form I didn't actually have a clue if it could work. Any ideas for a shopping list?
