I am considering a Smart LED like Phillips Hue on Amazon from their 3 bulb starter pack.

One of those bulbs I want to put in our lounge, to replace one of the 4 LED's already there, so I can dim it via my smartphone.

I have a dumb question however, and that is, if the switch on the wall has been turned OFF, then I assume I cannot just turn ON the one bulb via the APP, if they are all controlled via the same switch?

If that is the case, unfortunately, that means the use case is moot.

I switched out all the lights in my house with Philips Hue and found the other person living with me kept turning them off at the light switch.

Simple solution - Hue Dimmer buttons and some tape on the lightswitch.

Yes, if the switch is physically turned off at the wall, the corresponding light will not turn on through the app. Hence why a Belkin WeMo Light Switch may be a better alternative, however they are a bit low on stock in NZ at the moment... But that is another story.

Not sure if this is of any use to anyone... Osram Lightify bulbs work perfectly with the Philips Hue bridge.

Bunnings in Oz has them for $25 (I bought 5), but I'm not sure where you can get them in NZ.

The Lightify gateway is crap though. I went through 4 of them and they all failed to update. Lucky Bunnings replaced and finally refunded.

Now that I have a couple of hue lightstrips working I was watching a video on cheaper options that work with a Hue bridge. The one that drew my attention was a FLS-PP IP ballast that will run 12V lights trips. Not available locally, but if it is ZigBee it should be a standard frequency usable in NZ (he asked hopefully)? Anyone used these or something similar that is compatible with Hue?
Just seems of it will work, it will be about half the cost of genuine Philips hue stuff. Mind you, I go to Oz pretty regularly so may have to pop in to Bunnings and check out their lighting stuff.
