Hey

We're looking to purchase a table from Target furniture for our new dining room extension. Just wondering if anyone has any tips on alternative delivery options? The delivery fee for the table is $115 and the table is only $300! So was hoping there might be another way to get it delivered. Thx!

Also, open to other furniture store ideas. We have a limited selection in Dunedin so it would be nice to find some others that aren't quite so expensive. Into minimalist, modern, midcentury, scandinavian.

We went through a similar issue when building last year, and ended up doing a weekend trip to Chch for furniture - get in touch with Trish at Freedom Furniture Moorhouse if they have anything that looks good, or get a quote from these guys to transport your Target order.

Just on the Target stuff, I'd suggest you try and see their stuff in person, as the quality in real life is about as good as you'd expect for the price they charge.

Also, not sure if you're aware, but Early Settler is opening here next month too - down Princes St, near the Oval.

@nofam: that's a most opportune post for us, as we're looking at purchasing a sofa bed and sofa from Target. Their price is significantly lower than any other equivalent we've found - about 30% less than an equivalent pairing on discount from Harvey Norman, which is about the same price as Freedom (which won't give discounts unless spending something like $7k).

These are NZ-made items in the fabric of our choice, so not the typical Target imported furniture which I'd certainly be suspicious of in terms of quality; but the problem is the store we went to had none of the range we'd be buying, so we'd be buying it without seeing it (or sitting on it) in the flesh. Should we be sceptical, and there's a good reason why it's that much cheaper than other NZ custom-made sofas from other companies?

I got a quote for shipping from Target as well - something close to $300 from Wellington to PN (though I assume it would be simply delivered en-route from Akld rather than go down then back up), whereas it was going to be $90 for the same sized sofas from Paraparaumu to PN from another store. I decided that if we did purchase from them I'd be happy to rent a covered trailer and pick up the items myself, given it would save close to $200...

We had a similar debate ourselves, as we were after two lounge suites - a corner chaise for our main living room that would get the most use, and a 3+2 seater combo for our living/dining room that really only gets used on weekends, or when we have friends over. We'd originally intended on getting both from Freedom, based on the look we were after, but ended up getting the chaise from Hunter Furniture, as the wear rating on fabrics and foam padding comfort was leagues ahead of Freedom. We still got the 3+2 from Freedom, and I think their balance of quality/price is pretty bang-on, but we 'butt-tested' a heap of furniture on our trip, and you really can feel the difference.

So bottom-line, you get what you pay for - and even a few (mid-priced) models at Freedom that we'd earmarked as possibles were instantly ruled out when we sat on them.

Keep in mind Harvey Norman pricing can be negotiated instore, it's expected but kiwi's don't like to for whatever reason. Look at the same furniture on pricespy etc and see if it has a low pricepoint within the past 12 months and work towards that.

That's nice but the OP is in Dunedin and wants furniture delivered from Christchurch. It strikes me as reasonable to expect to pay for this.

Exactly - unfortunately, furniture is big and heavy, so freight will always be a consideration.

It's catch 22... There is obviously a cost to those businesses to provide that service.

On one hand, if they offer free delivery then they'd likely have to assume that all product they sell is going to be delivered and increase the pricing to allow for that. On the other hand, and taking it further - I presume that you'd also not pay (or charge) mileage if providing/receiving a service that's off-site also?

Yep, I'd agree it's always important to negotiate - HN's 'list' prices on products like furniture always appear to be flexible! I guess there'll always be some who are ok about paying list price, others who wait around for a sale, and some who'll ask for any time for the best price. Given the list price for the 3-seater and a sofa bed is over $5.5k, I'm happy to push and prod for the best deal.

Has anyone had experience with the NZ-made furniture purchased from Target Furniture? Most of their stuff appears to be imported, but the couches we were looking at are made by an Auckland company called LV Furniture (and about $1500 less than the EJP sofas from HN).
