Doing a bathroom renovation at the moment and we are replacing a shower with a new bath / shower combo.

The plumber has installed a flexible accordion style waste pipe under the bath attached to the existing waster water in the concrete floor.

It's going to be tiled over and I am a little concerned that this sort of pipeline is not really fit for purpose.

The plumber is pretty adamant that it meets code and a pretty standard set up now a days.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of set up?

I am thinking that it is going to block up easier than a smooth pvc pipe and it has a lot of points of failure...

If you don't like it, get him to change it, .... its your house..... whether it meets code or not is not the issue...

-That said, you will likely have to pay for the privilege of any variations....

Doesn’t sound fit for intended use. I’d expect to see that used somewhere easily accessible ie: under a sink in case it failed... if use it at all.

The picture is not displaying for me.

There is 1 brand of flexible pipe available that is suitable. And then there are others that often come with imported baths. Which are no good even as a vacuum cleaner hose.

Is the plumber a registered Master Plumber? In any event, ask the person what indemnification against failures you have signed up to.

Is that the same image as in the OP? As there is definitely room to put a normal trap in that space. And the shower / bath is not even directly supported by the floor. You can see one of the feet at most held by the foam.

I definitely wouldn't be happy. Assuming that that photo is of the actual job.

That is used for extractor fans, get it replaced, those gaps will fill with rubbish and he is pulling a fast one on you. I would not use this plumber again !!!!!!!

I saw something like that being used under a sink the other day and thought the same, no way in hell I'd use that in my house. Shower drains are forever needing to be unclogged as it is, compared to most other drains in houses. That thing would only serve to collect more grime and become a real problem when it comes time to clean the drain. Get the plumber to change it before it causes real problems.

No, they would usually be 100-150 mm diameter, this is 40 mm. This sort of thing.

OK that makes sense, still for a vanity this is could be OK, not sure for a shower, I wonder how theses manage soap scum.

Mmmm interesting... RUN FORREST RUN.

I wouldn’t be happy with that either. That looks like an expensive mistake waiting to happen in the future. Don’t accept it and insist the plumber makes good with proper pipe.

Have seen these flexible hoses a few times. They are used with the newish trend of baths with the integrated sides. theres no way to connect the bath drain up when installed in place with a solid pvc so it connected with the flexible hose and slide back into the final position.
