We need to replace a toilet in our ensuite.

We are going to replace as close to like for like so the footprint should be very similar.

I am wondering what a plumber usually charges (roughly).

We would likely buy the toilet itself.

Bunnings charges $339 to install a new toilet via a registered plumber so I would assume that they take clip a small margin in this and rest goes to plumber so installation directly via plumber should be under $339?

why don't you just call a few plumbers, you are going to call them anyway when you go to do it because as you have stated you "need to replace it"

we replaced the whole toilet a few years ago and it was $560 with a dual flush toilet supplied by the plumber, we let the plumber supply the toilet bcause we wanted to make sure everything lined up with the plumbing left.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

One thought about doing that, a friend of mine's a plumber and a while back went on about the low quality of some of the budget toilets that places like M10 and Bunnings are selling, not so much that they're badly made but that the extensive use of plastic and the thinnest possible porcelain is going to see him in a awful lot of work in 5-10 years time, if not six months after install in some cases. So buying the cheapest you can find may not be the best strategy in the long term.

We recently had two toilets replaced as part of a wider tidy up of the house, so can't isolate the cost I'm sorry.

One thing to be aware of - I purchased the two toilets without considering the water intake. Existing toilets were fed via a connection into the side. The new toilets feed from the rear into the cystern. So we had to remove GIB, move the water pipes to the correct place and re-gib. Added a fair bit of $ and cost to the project (although looks much tidier).

Have also had the plumber comment about the number of cheap toilets needing minor repairs - seat fittings especially failing after very short periods of time.

The closer fit you can find the better, same S/P Trap distance from wall, water input to cistern set-up and if you have a cistern tap already on wall. Toilets are easy for any plumber, they need to put a new rubber pan connector in between sewage pipe and toilet ($25), mount toilet to floor/wall (screws supplied with toilet), some will use silicon around bottom to make look good. Usually a 1-2 hour job, may need to get under house to shorten pipe or put new elbow in ($10).

I bought a $299 Bunnings Mondella Concerto about 9 months ago. No regrets so far. For a 4.5l flush it gets a remarkable number of no marks after 1st flush. The base has a hole either side allowing for the inlet valve at bottom of cistern or a $30 change of valve allows for a tap in the top of the cistern.

Edit: the silicone at the bottom isn't just to look good. No porcelain will be perfectly flat so bedding the base in a couple of mm of silicone stops any movement. Clear isn't noticeable whereas no white will match.

Or expect $200+ for plumber charge plus toilet cost.
