I've bought brand a new house which uses 45kg LPG bottles, all the install has been done and I noticed there was a small 9kg bottle in the garage which they obviously used for testing the system. I've ordered 2 bottles to be delivered and have been told they won't connect the bottles and that I need to pay a gas fitter to connect the bottles the first time. Is this necessary? to get a gas fitter out just to screw in 2 bottles and turn them on? the whole system has been installed, checked and passed all its compliance certs so it seems a bit silly that I can't just connect the bottles myself..

You probably could, but if anything went wrong (ie: boom), then you probably wont be covered by insurance.

The gas supplier is probably reading from a script that assumes the installation hasn't been completed.

"A registered gasfitter will complete the connection process, supply the regulator and complete the pipe work to connect your appliances."

Give the gas fitter that did the work a call.

This is what I was thinking after seeing the line about completing the connection process, its already been connected, I'll try and find the gas fitters details, cheers for that.

@harmonist Test for gas leaks around the fitting just using soapy water and small painting brush you don't need a gas fitter

Agreed, screwing in a gas bottle isn't DIY, I used to fill and reconnect a 9kg bottle for a gas stove at a previous place, will do the soapy water check, cheers for that.

Ever hook up a 9KG bottle to a BBQ? Congratulations you can connect a gas bottle. In fact you can even use a 9KG bottle if the big bottle runs out.

Supplying gas to a house requires pressure testing etc. Even a small job in a house requires the gas fitter to carry out tests and certify. If this is the first time these larger cylinders are being attached and used then I would believe a gas fitter would be required to fit and test. It is not the same as connecting to a BBQ. I would not accept a few words of advise on a forum for something that could have a tragic result. The last time we had a pressure test done at home it cost less than $100.

@MikeB4 For filling and fitting gas bottles yes. Way back in the early 90s I did a course and got a cert for gas bottle filling (It has expired) I know this is very different than gas fitter

My brother is qualified and he advised anyone can fit the screw on bottles and only check is the soapy water check required and expiry date of the gas bottle (Last 10 years and it's stamped on the gas bottle)

If you’re adding bottled gas to your home for the first time, you will require a gasfitter to install and connect the system. Safety regulations require that once OnGas has delivered the cylinders, the gasfitter will need to return to the property to connect the installation to the gas supply (cylinders) and turn the gas on.

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

Call your gasfitter and see what they say.

Their details will be on the gas certificate you have with all your important documents. If it's not, ask the builder why not!?

If it the install has been certified they have already tested the installation as being sound and safe to use.

The usual process is you organise the bottles be dropped off ahead of time, then the gasfitter hooks them up as part of system commissioning. Seems like it was missed, hence they want a gasfitter to hook them up. Maybe they'd accept the certificate from the gasfitter?

I sh*t you not but was at a friends house who had just done a new gas install for both water heating and cooking completed.

He turned the gas on outside and came in and in the enclosed space where the oven was there was a braided hose long enough you could pull the oven out enough to get to it. He did his check with a lighter and i bloody ran like hell when I seen him pull the light out, when I came back I give him one hell of a bollocking. You read about people like this did not think I knew any though.
