Hi, I need to replace an existing heated towel rail.  There is an existing outlet already wired.

The information out there is a bit vague.

Since it is already wired, do I legally need to use a sparky to install the replacement towel rail?

Thanks

MH

If you want to pay someone to do it, that person can be an electrician or an "electrical serviceperson (authorised to disconnect / reconnect)".

If you want to do it at your own residence (not a rental property) you can do it under ECP51.

https://www.worksafe.govt.nz/laws-and-regulations/standards/electricity-standards-and-codes-of-practice/

Page vi.

Make sure you do the connections up tight.

What are the main electrical repairs you can do yourself at your home?

For a full list of the electrical repairs you can do on your home, please refer to Regulation 57 of the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010.

The work you can do includes:

  • Replacing switches; socket outlets, lamp holders, ceiling roses, water heater switches, thermostats and elements
  • Repairing light fittings
  • Moving, repairing or replacing flexible cords that are permanently connected to outlets or ceiling roses
  • Disconnecting and reconnecting permanently wired appliances
  • Moving switches, sockets and lighting outlets, but only if they are wired with tough plastic-sheathed cables
  • Installing, extending, or altering any cables, except the main cables that come from the street to your switchboard
  • Fitting plugs, cord extension sockets or appliance connectors to a flexible cord
  • Replacing fuse wires and fuse cartridges

I would never put one of these things in due to power usage. We have one in the house we bought back in February and never turned it on.  Just use it as a normal towel rack

Stick a timer or shelly on it.

This is what I have done as I don't have a power outlet nearby anyway. But you can put a timer on it so it heats for just a couple of hours a day at a set time.. They are just a massive PITA when there are power cuts which in my area occur very regually.

Mine ran its feed off the lightswitch so I just put in a 4 gang deta wifi switch for the 2 lights + fan + the towel rail in the bathroom so I can schedule it. Also means I can have the fan turn off at night since it gets left on all the time.
