Hi all,

Just after a bit of help getting the TVNZ live streams be it America's Cup or news broadcasts to stream using VLC. I saw someone doing it today but didn't have a chance to ask how it can be done.

Is it as simple as copying the URL into VLC because when i try that VLC thinks about it for a bit but doesn't achieve anything?

While we're on the subject i may as well ask if anyone knows how to do it with TV3 live streams too?

TVNZ use brightcove which use various technologies to protect the streams from generic streaming and potential capture. Hence the Android specific App that has now been released.

At one time you could pull out the stream address from selected TV3 streams but that has long gone.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

I don't think its possible any more there used to be an awesome XBMC plugin with all the NZ channels but tvnz/tv3 etc didnt seem to like that

Seems very odd for FTA broadcasters to care about as long as ads are in the stream, but its probably a studio requirement

The ridiculous "only samsung tv and android devices" requirement also seems very short sightedX

Live streaming I can't say anything meaningful about but I have found a method to download streams from TVNZ OnDemand.
It takes a lot of skill, time and patience but it works.

I don't think there is a method that will allow direct streaming from VLC although it might be possible with the right URL assembly. To download to your PC the GetFLV tool seems to work but the free trial only gives first 50% or 30MB whichever is smaller - this will show the RTMP URL. I have managed to get downloads working on free tools but it took time and effort and beyond what is probably sensible when there are PC, IOS and now some Android options for viewing.
