Hi Team,

I've recently started using UnoTelly so that I can get access to Netflix and other overseas streaming media. However I am having an issue around performance.

If I just use UnoTelly DNS on the AppleTV, the streaming performance is slow. If I alter the DNS settings on the router, the streaming is acceptable, however other devices that are using the router (laptop, ipad, etc) seem to slow down. Which I guess makes some sense.

The question I have is this:

Has anyone actually found a decent DNS service solution to the problem? One where the AppleTV streams well and all other devices do in addition? If so, can you post the details here?

I am currently on the Telstraclear/Vodafone no data limit HighSpeed cable. It gives me a solid 50Mb on speed test.

Hi,

The DNS settings wouldnt impact throughput but more likely browsing and response times from web page requests.. Keep in mind netflix is hosted in the USA. Offshore speeds may vary depending on where its hosted.
Unotelly seems to be the fastest DNS service though. Its really annoying though where you need to select specifically to access tvnz on demand and sacrifice other USA shows. Thats what broke it for me.

I am trialling UnoTelly on my ATV (was using UnblockUS before).

It seems fine, and maybe a little faster (The Accessing Netflix... message does not seem to be up for as long).

UnblockUS worked fine too, I will probably cancel my UnblockUS sub and take up a UnoTelly one though, mainly because UnoTelly is advertising on here (not that I see it) and offering a discount.

I get about 18mbit download with my Slingshot connection using global mode and can stream HD Netflix with ease, next to no buffering time when starting something. Parents get around 13mbit download with Vodafone, it takes ages to start streaming anything and when it does it never clicks into HD with both hola and getflix.

Isn't that because of Vodafone's proxy? I think you may be able to get them on an unproxied connection on request, speeding Netflix up. One of the vodafone employees would know more.

OK, thought I should post an update on this, I've spent several hours in the last two days trying to figure this one out and have come up with a weird solution.

First of all, I can't get Netflix to run reliably on my AppleTV nor my XBOX. AppleTV knows where I am somehow and while it worked at first, when I rebooted later, it had deleted the Netflix button. Trying to create an AppleID from scratch that is located in the US is all but impossible.

XBox did very much the same.

In the end I have managed to get it running on my laptop. I use Astrill for security when I'm out and about, and you can tell it to terminate in the US. It's not the fastest, but it works.

Astrill does have a service that allows you to run the VPN straight off your router, but it's likely to slow everything in the house down again.

So for the moment, Astrill on a single PC seems to do the job.
