We are keen to sort a watch for my soon to be 9 Year old Son.

The problem is his wrist is puny (he is in the 4th percentile for height and weight but is still healthy and happy and eats fine).

In an ideal world these are what we want:

1) Clock

2) Stop Watch

3) Step Counter

4) Alarm or maybe 2

5) Sleep tracker

6) Water resistant or ideally able to be swum/showered with, but this isn't essential, but minimum of lightly submerged capable).

7) Relatively inexpensive if possible.

Anyone able to recommend one. Everything we have seen is either stupidly expensive ($150+) or doesn't fit him.

Xaomi Band 2? Just got one for my wife (massive outlay of $30), just doesn't have the alarm and stop watch in your list. Seems like a nicely put together watch that does things reasonably well. After a week, I rate it (for $30)...

Have they got a smartphone? If so, the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 can do most of that, minus a stopwatch and alarm.  Although the phone would have the stopwatch, and using the app with the watch has other features. But it also has a heartrate monitor. Not sure how water resistant it is. The most basic  apple watch is also potentially a good option although outside your price range, but that doesn't have sleep tracking, although there maybe some third party apps that do it, I am not sure as I haven't tried.

I think it possibly has an alarm if you set it up with the app, although not 100% sure. It vibrates instead of having an audible beep. THere is some info about alarms here https://www.quora.com/How-good-is-the-Mi-Band-as-an-Alarm

Correct. Looks like the Fitbit Alta and should be in the market very soon.

Garmin Vivofit Jr? https://buy.garmin.com/en-NZ/NZ/p/544984#specs

That looks perfect. Thanks! We looked this a year ago and it didn't have some of those features I didn't think.

No worries - here's some more detail - https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/09/garmin-vivofit-jr-2-review-everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know.html

I think it was only released in the last 6 months or so.

The 2 has a bigger display and a stretch band. 130mm is the smallest though, so this is going to be more like a bangle than a band :)

My mum has a vivofit 2, and I don't think it is as good as the Mi Band 2. It is fine as a watch and showing the step count, and the battery lasts a year. However syncing with  their ipad is a pain and is buggy. You usually have to go into the app and do it manually and it can take multiple attempts to sync all the data as it is very slow. Occasionally it fails and doesn't transfer all the data, so you can be missing days. The strap is also a PITA to take on and off as it has a plastic swivel clasp. ALthough it was good for what it was a few years ago. But it looks very bulky compared to the Mi Band 2 for instance. The new models maybe better, although they look like they have reduced the screen size to allow the orientation to be rotated 90 degrees.

Just to provide an alternative viewpoint, I have three Garmin devices (Vivosmart 3, Forerunner 235 and an Edge 520). I occasionally have trouble syncing the Edge 520 but no trouble with any of the others. I usually get the Edge transfer sorted in 5 mins or so of the initial failed attempt to upload.

We got a free one from Kellogs, over steps (which makes it pointless to compare against adults ones), but ok for a day to day comparison against itself.

There's a bunch on them probably on Aliexpress.

But it's real basic, time and steps or distance only.
