You will be able to insure it, you just won't be covered to drive it while on your auto restricted licence.

Aredwood: You are far better off just getting your full licence asap. And get an el cheapo automatic car to see you through, assuming you don't currently own a car or you must replace your current car.

I think the automatic only restriction is silly. As by the time you have your restricted licence, you should already know how to change gears without any problem. And it also makes it harder for young people to get jobs. As a lot of trade vehicles are manuals. And if your licence says automatic only, the guy who doesn't have that restriction on their license is going to get the job instead.

In fairness if you pass your restricted licence test in a manual there is no restriction. It stops people who have never learnt a manual from adding that in while still learning to be a driver (on your restricted).

To add to the above, I know some insurance companies have a higher excess (like $1000) for when you have a restricted license so it is in your best interest to get a Full License when you can.
