I have a Japanese Nissan Tiida 2008, imported to New Zealand. Its all in Japanese, however I have successfully reached the point in which my phone is now connected to the car for both calling AND audio. I played a song on my phone, no sound came from the phone, indicating it was connected to the car and "playing". However, here I am stuck. There is TV, Aux, AM, FM and CD but there is no option where I can click and start streaming music from my phone. I am sooooo confused, What to click to let the music from my phone come through the car?

Help meh.

Well first thing you want to do is confirm you can call out and receive phone calls,in most cases you can only do hands free and not be able to stream music by bluetooth with the older model units from Japan.

An 'aux' input selection can sometimes be set up to manage all auxiliary inputs, whether by Bluetooth, USB or 3.5mm plug, so could it be that 'aux' on your car is the appropriate input for BT as well?

In regards to any buttons or screens in Japanese - I assume you've used Google Translate or similar to determine meaning? While you say you've got it connected, it could be worth checking all menus for a setting that needs to be adjusted (though I'd be surprised it doesn't work 'out of the box' if correctly connected).

Have you also tried searching for a manual for your car? As an example, our Leaf came with an English manual which provided instructions for the Japanese head unit. Could be something similar for yours.

Yip I've seen a few Japanese head units that support pairing for calling but lack the A2DP profile so can't be used to play audio.

We have a Carwings fitted Tiida of similar vintage.

there's no A2DP or streaming ability...just BT calling if you can make it work.

The AUX plug on our Tiida is not a standard one...it's a plug that looks like a SCART plug from the back of an old TV

Not gonna lie, very surprised I got replies so fast. Anyways, I was just dicking around in the car with the translator again and clicked something that actually called my phone. So I know that the calling thing can work. There is actually no plug in at all for the aux, even though there is many options and buttons that say aux is available. Now that I think about it, there is no plug in. for anything. at all. I have looked at literally every single menu, option, button, whatever it is, I've spent a good couple hours in this car trying to figure things out. The car is brand new, but second hand, we are the second owners, so there is no manual sadly. Maybe I can google a manual or something lol.

The calling bluetooth option is pretty dumb anyways considering it has Japanese commands, and I'm not wasting any more time trying to figure that out.

At this rate, there doesn't seem to be any option to play music through the car, which is very misleading since I actually went through a whole bunch of steps to allow for media and audio to actually be accepted for the car or whatever. So, I can't do aux, can't do bluetooth. CD's have limited minutes so that still sucks, apparently FM transmitters aren't too good, and speaking of FM, only 2 radio stations are available! How dumb. Guys, I just want some music. Any other options?

There is also this slot thing. Its about 2 inches wide with this weird little nob thing that's totally useless (says on and off, but turns nothing on or off so?????) I'll jump on my phone and post a pic if I can, then maybe you's can identify what it is?

If it's Nissan carwings, it's pretty much useless! Best option for music is bluetooth FM transmitter, as mentioned by someone else the Xiaomi Roidmi 3S from pbtech, works great, there's plenty of others to choose from for hands free calling as well.

If it was me I'd get a cheap headunit with bluetooth installed, you get a manual, nz radio stations, and a lot less hassle.

I have a 2007 Toyota with a japanese head unit, luckily mine has a 3.5mm aux in on the front so I use a bluetooth handsfree adapter connected to that.

Mine does play MP3s though, yours might as well. Not the best option these days but you can still get a few hours of music on a CD that way in a pinch.

You might find that AUX input is somewhere unnasuming.... glove box, centre console, under the seats or in the boot under parcel tray. It may or may not be using standard RCA or 3.5mm connectors and infact be using some factory OEM connector.

Eitherway, have a google to see what aftermarket headunit will fit the space. you can get all sorts of trim fits these days. Theres a few NZ suppliers outside of the usual big box auto retailers.

Sometimes the Aux input exists on the head unit, but a cable has not been fitted.

Not gonna lie, first reaction to any post like this is rip it out!

Even those cheap android headunits work quite well for basics, an integrate gps, rear view cam and support bluetooth streaming etc, for around $100 even on aliexpress (assuming it will ever ship with the current virus issues).

The problem with 'ripping it out' is that this isn't feasible for an increasing number of cars, given the move away from a standard DIN (single or double) arrangement, and the increasing integration of audio controls with wider car controls.

I struck this exact problem with a Nissan (2001 Primera) I owned years ago; the only answer was to add what 'smarts' I could to that built-in stereo (which, in those days, amounted to 3.5mm and iPod plugs connected in via the CD changer input!).

Yep, fully understand. Just went through this to a lesser degree with Mazda MPVs twin built in cameras.
They were 6V fed, and built into places you wouldn't easily want to replace them.

Worse if it does air con in an integrated unit.

Also difficult if pieces of the stereo are spread across a whole dash section, beyond the limits/space of a standard double din unit. Requires trying to source a whole dash section to replace.

Not easy, but if it can be done for cheap, then it tends to improve the enjoyment of the vehicle.

Since you’re not into FM transmitters, guess the easiest way to get music in your car is a headphone or a Bluetooth speaker...

I have a 2006 Tiida with Carwings...they are awesome if you’re in Japan and uses a Docomo phone, here it looks good but is totally useless...glad my dealer changed the player but also removed the screen above it...I guess it’s a worthy trade off as now radio signals are correct, Bluetooth works, there’s USB and surprisingly both cameras still work
