I was wondering if any savvy types might know the best way of getting the money I have in a US account into my NZ ASB account. Unfortunately the antiquated US account doesn't provide any international transfer options through their online banking, in fact according to them you have to be at their branch in person to transfer internationally. I've considered writing myself a check and depositing in the ASB account but unsure what fees would be involved. I could send the money through Paypal to my NZ Paypal account and then put it in the ASB account, but apparently I'd be charged $200 on the US Paypal to NZ Paypal transfer?!

Transfers over NZ$150 from Paypal to NZ account are free.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Yes but I'd have to first send it to my NZ Paypal account from my US Paypal account (which is linked to my US bank account), that's where the fee is.

Ask at your NZ bank to see if 1) They'll accept a cheque drawn on the US bank, and 2) How much they'll charge for the privilege of accepting your money.

I've used Customhouse for $US business transfers for years. Reputable company.

They're now part of Western Union (a name which I associate with SCAM! for some reason)

But transfers still work well, are lower cost than banks, better rates.

As Xeon says, worth a look.

Search for threads on this topic, there was a huge one a couple of years back where I got that link and a smaller one a month or two ago. I transferred USD from kiwibank USD account to ASB easily and got good rates. Pretty sure it'll be just as easy with an account in the US, they have accounts everywhere.

I did a small transfer with them before I did a bigger transfer, to assure myself they were reputable. They seem to be, all my transfers arrived as expected with the amounts expected. As suggested, do a search for more verification.

I've used transferwise.com a few times to transfer money from Europe to NZ and couldn't be happier. They charge a fixed 0.5% fee, and allegedly offer an exchange rate closer to the interbank unlike your bank or Paypal.

PS I have a few invites for fee waiving on your first transfer, so PM if you need one.

You'll get a much better conversion rate with someone like http://www.nzforex.co.nz/ than with a back, or western union.. They worked well for me for UK --> NZ

I have used http://www.tranzfers.com/ for the last 10 years from UK to NZ with no issues. I believe they are related to NZForex.
