Hi all, I built myself a new PC and decided to use the old hardware for a HTPC.
Current Specs

  •  Generic LGA775 motherboard
  •  Dual Core E5200 @ 2.5Ghz
  •  Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS (Silent) with 256MB dedicated, 767MB shared system memory. This is currently using the Microsoft WDDM driver) and VGA output to the TV.
  •  2GB DDR2
  •  Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 - Running Windows Media Centre
  •  Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2200 (Dual HD DVB Tuner)
  •  160GB 7200 8Mb Seagate sata hard drive (ST3160811AS)
  •  1360x768 LCD TV (LC37A53X) I realise this isn't Full-HD, but its adequate for now.
Everything looked good at first but after a while we noticed its not nearly as smooth as the old dedicated freeview receiver I had (homecast ht3000)
Most of the time its watch-able, but it is like the frame-rate is lower than it should be. Fast motion doesn't look good and sometimes It would be as low as maybe 5-10fps. Occasionally the screen will tear so the bottom 1/3 or so is black/deformed. Also changing channels takes a little while to come right.

I imagine its either the video card or the hard drive. I was planning on putting in a second 1TB and setting up the recordings to go there. I assume running the OS and the recordings on different drives will make a huge difference but maybe someone has an opinion on this?

And also I want to put a blu-ray drive in, Any thoughts on the specs with that in mind?

Thanks in advance!

Well the first thing I would do is put in the proper nVidia driver for the graphics card.
The Microsoft one doesn't do any hardware acceleration I don't think.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

You need a video card that does H.264 hardware acceleration if you want watchable video. That card is too old to support it.

What Steve Biddle said. Minimum cards for Freeview HD were an Nvidia 8500GT or from the 9400GT.

Until recently I was using an 8600GT with built in HDMI with good results.

What they said, but also that 2GB ram is a little low. For optimum results you really want 4 if you can stretch that far. Do the graphics card update first and then see how you go though.

+1 replace video card with a current gen low spec card and you will most likely be OK without needing to do anything else.

Thanks everyone
Will I need to make any considerations for blu-ray playback as well?

(apart from having to shell out for software that can play them)

2GB RAM is plenty for Freeview and media playback.  However, 2GB may not be enough when sharing with graphics card.

Any bluray drive will do for playback. i have a 2x speed external USB drive thats about 3 years old.  My HTPC spec is similar to yours with a low-end ATI radeon card that does H.264 decoding and has HDMI out.

That would do the job and no fan to add to the noise.

Hi,

This is the card I had in my previous HTPC (Some dual core AMD based computer with 2GB or RAM)
The PC had no problem playing Freeview HD and even BluRays.

Plus it's fairly cheap IIRC.

Personally I would go with NVidia rather then ATI due to the issues people have had in the past with ATI and Freeview HD but on the other hand I cannot say it will have issues just that from what I have seen on these forums it is more likely to have issues.

Ask what software comes with your blu-ray drive. I use windvd 11 which provides really good playback.

+1 on the Nvidia vrs Ati, I use Ati in all my other pc's but have never got an Ati card to play nice with freeview.
