Has anyone seen The Warehouse' promo for a VEON 32" LED LCD (HD ready) going for $299? Any takers?

I was very interested, but visited 4 stores and none of them had a display unit. It looks like a new slim design so the other Veon models weren't fair comparison.

If anyone has purchased one, do let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Saw them at Coastlands, Paraparaumu yesterday

The picture quality did not look that great. Personally I would stay away

If you can hold out until boxing day chances are you will get a name brand 32" HD Ready for under $300. As they are now they're hovering around the $400 retail mark.

I wouldn't bother.
HD Ready is only 720p (approx 1 megapixel screen) display and you need a STB for Freeview.
Full HD is 1080p (approx 2 megapixel screen) with Freeview tuner built in.
The diffence in the display would be quite noticeable.
As usual you get what you pay for.
Will be lots of better bargains next week after Xmas.

I saw the VEONs, and on different occaisions, they have looked "good" and "terrible". I suspect The Warehouse doesn't have a good setup for display (i.e. poor source and connection equipment, and no staff willing/caring to set everything up nicely, or deal to poor pictures).

On the subject of TVs, I still have a 50" 720p Panasonic willing to swap for a 32-42" tv if anyone wants a size upgrade. Moving to a much smaller lounge and the 50" just wont fit :(

Interesting comments as that is my understanding of HD ready also.

However sales person at Lyall Bay warehouse was adamant that HD ready meant the freeview was built in at full 1080P

not much info on google on these sets in this regards from look last night

FYI - was looking at 46inch Venon for $899

My understanding of HD ready means the display is 720p but it can accept (and downscale) 1080p inputs just fine.

Thats the accepted definition of the term, then it comes down to the actual specs provided by the manufacturer and/or retailer.

In this case, The Warehouse is stating 1080 and Freeview built in. I think it's safe to take that at face value.

I haven't seen a non-Freeview TV at The Warehouse for a while - which is great.

They shouldn't have been sold for years really, as freeview has been around for many years now.

The one you mentioned is the Full HD version going for $399.

The one I was referring to is merely HD Ready (http://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/red/catalog/product/Veon-32-Inch-HD-LED-TV-SRO9104?SKU=1647720) for $100 less. And the design seems to be a slimmer version.

That has Freeview built in.

Freeview HD on a 720p 50" screen at close range looks "very good", so I'd imagine on a reasonable quality 32" 720 panel it should look equally good (or better).

I often think it is false economy buying house or no name brands in teh long run. You possibily have less CGA protection, and often the features and quantity aren't up there with good brands, which often aren't much more. TVs are cheap as these days, so I don't think there is much excuse not to go for a sony, panasonic, samsung etc, especially as the boxing days specials are coming up.

Shows how much they understand.

I'd ask then to demonstrate by trying to tune Freeview if that's the case.
Soon see if it has digital auto-setup tuning or not even without an aerial just by searching the on-screen menu.
Or ask to have a look at the User Manual.

Thats not the under $300 model the OP is talking about.
The $299 model is HD Ready, not Full HD and doesn't specify the screen resolution but will be only 720p.
