I can't hear the dialougue (people talking) when I play my DVD movies, only the background sound.
Can anybody help?

Is this on a PC or DVD player?

I suspect you're trying to listen to a 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS audio stream and only have stereo speakers as in 5.1 audio most vocals will come from the centre speaker.

Try pushing the audio button or sound setup and select stereo.

It on PC, I'm running media player on Vista.
I have Logitech Z-5500 speakers (that support Dolby Digital) so I don't know why it doen't work

What is coming out of the centre speaker, if working correctly all dialog (within reason) comes from the centre speaker/channel.

The centre speaker just plays background sound like the other speakers.

Im not sure if all pc's can do this, but i know that my pc, which has coaxial inputs/outputs, i can change the channels around.

ie. left to right, swap the centre and sub, etc.

Is there anywhere that you can do this? Also have you tried plugging it in using the 3.5mm plugs, just to make sure that the centre speaker is actually working?

EDIT:

Sorry im blind, have you tried the 3.5mm option to make sure that there is nothing wrong with the speakers themselves?

Also is there an equalizer with the software you are using to play the movie? If so is it turned off?

Is this the first time this happened? I have a logitech z-680 which is the older version of z-5500. Since you are using optical cable decoding of audio will be done by the logitech's control pod hardware. In my control pod I can change the music effects by pressing "effect" button. Is there a similar button on the z-5500? Then it should be set to Dolby Digital or DTS.

The centre speaker works when playing music in itunes etc
I have set the effect to Dolby and changed it to stero but still doesnt work.
I had the same problem when I ran XP and I right clicked to change to stero and it worked...
I think its a software problem

Which software are you using? Usually DVD software have option to set audio to 5.1 (6 Channels). This depends on the software you are using, usually it's under settings/opions.

Make sure that Windows XP/Vista is also set to 5.1. In Windows XP it's under Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices>In Audio tab under Sound playback go to Advanced, then set Speaker setup to 5.1 surround sound speakers.

Everything in windows/ settings options is sweet.
Im running Realtek AC97, its built into the motherboard and I have the latest drivers for vista etc
