I have a Panasonic Vierra TV that is connected to everything through a Sony receiver via HDMI. All other components (e.g. DVD, cable, VCR) are connected to the receiver. The TV will play video/sound only when viewing cable. If I try to watch a DVD or VCR tape, only the video comes through. I can hear sound on my subwoofer, so it is obvious that the DVD and VCR players are transmitting audio to the receiver, but no sound comes out of TV speakers. I don't have a surround system, just TV speakers and subwoofer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

So just to confirm, you've got no speakers connected to your Sony Receiver other than a sub? That being the case I'm picking you're going to have problems. If you hit the Viera Tools button on your remote, and go into Viera Link. I'm picking you're set to Home Theatre (or similar such description). Changing this setting to TV will give you sound from your TV's speakers, but you'll lose the sub.

Why would you have a Sony receiver with only a sub and no other speakers connected?
How do you listen to the radio? How do you listen to the DVD/VCR etc?
How are your devices connected to the Amp.
Presumably if you use Stereo RCA or Optical/Coaxial connections the audio is not being transferred via HDMI to the TV which is probably normal. I suspect only devices connected via HDMI would pass sound to the TV via HDMI?
You would need to connect the amp's low level stereo output (if it has one) to the TV audio inputs or connect each device to the TV audio inputs.
Logical solution is to connect some speakers to the amp and enjoy surround sound rather than try to get stereo sound from the crappy TV speakers.
