Would a HDMI to DVI cable from Dick Smiths, transfer HD to a LCD?

VGA/DVI output is essentially HD by default if you're running at a resolution more than 720 vertical lines - ie running your PC at 1024x768 is technically a HD output.

If content on your PC is encoded in HD (ie is a movie file with more than 720 lines resolution) then it will be output to your LCD TV in HD if it is plugged in either by VGA, HDMI or Component and is running at a resolution of 1024x768 or greater. Ideally you want to run a screen at 1280x720/768 or 1360/1366x720/768 as this will solve any issues with aspect ratios being distorted.

Just be aware that not all TV's will take a PC input via HDMI and those that do will have very specific resolutions they will run at. Depending on your TV you could spend hours trying to get this working and solve issus with overscan or underscan to get the picture displayed correctly. Using a VGA input on the TV may be a lot easier to get working and should delivery virtually identical picture quality or in many instances a better.

You may also want to look at cables on TradeMe first - there were a few people selling them for under $20 when I got one which is a lot less than you'll pay in a shop.

Good point. CHeck the manufacturer of your TV. For example my JVC RP set while having a native resolution of 1368x768 only accepts 1024x768 over VGA. That's really annnoying and made worse when the image is actually windowed on the TV screen. It will do full resolution over HDMI but you need to send it a 1280x720 resolution to do that. And of course, because it's a TV, there are overscan issues. I corrected those by using a good video adapter card (in my case a NVidia 6200 based card) and Nvidia's driver software which has setting for a HDTV and the ability to correct for overscan in the image.

VGA has major banding issues on graidenets on a couple of panasonic LCDs I have tried - make it totally worthless for watching movies on, ok for an excel spreadsheet or something that has no gradients to show the problem. HDMI to DVI was ok, once a resolution it would work in was found, cant boot on the screen as the bios doesnt show, only a few specific resolutions will.
