Hey guys, Im interesting in taking my current sky+ box and card and distributing it around the house that
Im sharing with my mates at the mo, im a poor student :( and me and mates are planning to stick around
in accomodation throughout the summer so need some TV entertainment in all our rooms. Just
wondered if anybody had any information regarding cards specifically as have bought extra receivers.

Sounds like an illegal plan in work. As much as I know, duplicating Sky card is illegal as it is Sky's property. And each card produced by Sky will need to be activated at Sky's NOC.

You can try and risk it but don't say we didn't warn you about this...

God this reminds me of the time I was a poor student in the UK in the 80's... when you could not afford the ₤20 for a TV license. So you sit there watching and everytime someone knocks on the door, you have to hide the TV in the cupboard - just incase it it the visit from the TV detector van !!!

Joe, why dont you put your Skybox in a common room / kitchen - that way you can get all your mates to chip in for the monthly fees!

ermm you better say something legal before the mods find out about you and give a spanking ... in fact i didnt even know you can "buy receivers" other than subscribing!

Basically if you cannot afford to legally buy the necessary decoder or sky subscription, you should not be using Sky. Its all very well saying 'Well Sky is a big company and makes a lot of money... so not paying won't hurt them', what happens if 10% did it? 20% or 50%?

The result is that the price could increase for the legitimate subscribers, additional restrictions may be put in place for the legitimate subscribers, or perhaps jobs could be lost. I'm not saying thats its at that point but how would companies like Sky make money (not taking advertising into account) or break even if most/all of its subscribers don't pay for their services.

In regard to the poor student remark -Sky is not a necessity or a need. Its a luxury, and there are other means of getting TV (ie. free to air or freeview) which having to result to what amounts to piracy. This thread should probably be closed on that note.

I recommend getting the sky box installed in a certain location where everyone can enjoy it, or paying the $20 or so dollars for a second decoder. Second decoders are not all that expensive.

what we used to do was to share sky digital subcription as a flat. turns out to be about 10 bucks per person every month (about 5 soft drinks). we had the tv in the lounge, with a booking system for fair usage. (dont get sky uhf as costs the same!)
