Has anyone tried to use the raspberry pi to stream a computer screen wireless. I know there is software that allows the computer to stream it, but does the pi handle this wireless?

There VNC program designed to share desktop screen over network, but seems you want something else. Also VNC is very slow (1-2 frames per second over wi-fi) and doesn't support framebuffer (e.g. some games and video apps will show black screen over VNC.

So, what you want to achieve?

May be you just want wireless hdmi av transmitter/receiver instead?

thanks for the reply. What I want is to have my computer screen transmitted wireless to the raspberry pi, so I can watch videos that are running on the computer (lets say a youtube video) on the tv screen that is hooked up to the raspberry pi.

thanks for the tip, that obviously works with google chrome, but I also want to display the whole laptop screen not only the web browser (and I do not use chrome anyway I find firefox much better).
I do have the hardware now anyway (the pi) all I need is the software...

You said laptop, So why not just connect your laptop directly to the TV. Most TVs have a VGA connection to support older laptops. Most newer laptops would have a HDMI out connection.

What sort of computer do you have? If you have a Mac you can install Raspbmc on the Raspberry Pi and enable XBMC Airplay, then just airplay the content from your Mac/iDevices to the Raspberry Pi.

A better option would be to install Raspbmc and then install add ons for the web services you want to view (Youtube etc) and then just run them natively on the Raspberry Pi - that way you won't suffer any streaming interference from your computer.

Because then you can't use your laptop as a laptop while using it to view content on the screen. I can see what the OP wants to do, plugging a cable into the tv/laptop is not a solution to that.

XBMC on R Pi, works very well for me, and keeps getting better. You can stream any video and music from your PC. It does Youtube to download trailers so you might just need a plugin to use youtube directly. Maybe it does it natively, I never checked, very little interest in youtube personally unless I'm drunk and bored.

I don't think there is really any good way of doing this rdp works ok for the video but the sound is terrible (I think this is the rdp protocol), chromecast works by streaming the content from the original site not the starting device.

You can get vlc to cast the screen with some hacking around but its kind of nasty

really raspbmc is the best option or a chromecast

What I do not want is to have to connect a cable each time and move the laptop, it is in another room, plus I also have a pc with which I want to do the same. I have a function in the TV that allows me to stream media that I have on the laptop already and it works fine (with Nero Media centre)
But sometimes I just need to display the screen of the laptop on the TV and doing it directly with the pi through the internet is not an option in this case. So what I want is to use the TV as a computer display but without cables instead with wifi.

Q: What OS is on the laptop, win 7 or 8.1? What make/model is the tv?

tldr; Miracast sounds like the best fit for what you want to do:
1: You need a way to "Miracast" from your laptop this is inbuilt in win 8 and there are software options for win 7
2: You need a Miracast receiver connected to the tv, there are various options the simplest being Netgear, Belkin dongles/adapters. Looks like there are some projects to make raspbery pi a receiver but they don't look polished io me.

Windows 8 - Wireless Display/Miracast is built in:

Windows 7 - if you have an Intel wireless chipset you can use Intel WiDi:

Thanks, I have a windows 7 computer and a LG TV but as I said I am running the raspberry pi on the TV and that is the computer I want to receive it with.

By the way this is what I found on the link that the reply posted:

The Chromecast doesn’t simply display the contents of your device’s screen.

so that is exactly what I want to do! So obviously chromecast does not do this.
