So I recently gave my parents my surround sound system (Samsung HT-E3550). I set it up the same way I did on my TV at home which is also a Sony TV. Their TV picked up the system and comes up with a prompt "audio system active" although no sound is coming through the system. As said earlier, it was set up the exact same as I did on my TV. Same prompt came up. But no sound. I have also plugged in my optical cable to see if that was the issue. Did not make any difference though.

Any suggestions?

Other Info:
Audio system is set to D-IN
TV has freeview built in, which is what I am trying to get sound from.
Tried on analog, that didn't make a difference.

The TV needs to have an ARC HDMI port (ARC=Audio Return Channel I think).
The fact that the TV knows there is an audio system there seems to suggest it is an ARC HDMI port, but have you tried it on another port?

Is there an option in the TV to turn ARC on/off?

Does changing the volume on the TV remote change the Audio System volume, or the TV volume?

What model TV?

There is no port with ARC input. I just tried other HDMI ports and it picks up the audio system, but still no sound.

Tried looking for ARC settings in the settings menu with no luck. Nothing about ARC there.

Yes changing the volume on the TV changes the audio system volume also. It can also control the audio system in Blu-Ray mode.

TV is a Sony - KDL-40X4500

An optical cable replaces the need for ARC.
What audio out options do you have on the TV?
Is there PCM or Dolby options? What have you selected?
Please make sure the optical port is plugged in correctly too... they can be a little fussy.

Yes both those options. It's on PCM at the moment.

I'll double check the optical cord and get back to you. I'm pretty sucre its in properly though.

Looking at the Manual online the TV doesn't seem to have ARC on any HDMI input so presumably you are using an optical cable? Have you double checked the Audio settings in the TV Menu? Speaker set to Audio System and Audio out - Fixed. Also check Optical Out set to Auto.
