Morning all

I am sure this has been discussed before, but I can not find anything recently that covers this, so here goes.

I am looking for a Blu Ray player that meets a couple of specifications.  First is, it needs to be region free for both Blu Ray and DVD, and second (and not so important as I can work around this) is it would be good if it has a composite connection as well as HDMI as the TV I plan to connect it to does not have HDMI.

All advice gratefully received.

Cheers

Rob

I don't know if you can get too many Region Free BD players. DVD region free is not an issue.

Have a look at Oppo - http://www.oppo.co.nz/

Thank you both for your reply.  I will look into Oppo and keep searching through the forum to see if I can find something that is relevant.

Thanks again

Rob

Havent seen analog outputs on bluray players for ages, but hdmi to composite boxes are really cheap on ebay.

The cheap ones have no scaler so make the player output 480i on the hdmi. If you want to split it to 2 displays the cheap ones will take everything down to SD quality.

There was a discussion about a Toshiba a couple of years ago, and I ended up nabbing one :)

I think the model was BDX3200KY, but it's probably not available new anymore. No idea whether it has analogue output (I'm not at home right now).

I don't believe any blu-ray will let you get picture out by any other means than HDMI, DRM reasons. I do know you can get Optical Audio Out on some models.

As for region free I believe manufactures are required to do this (or at least have the option). I know my friend purchased a blu-ray from JB Hi-Fi and they organized a person to come out to her house one evening after work and set it free (special button sequence). Try talking to them.

I have one with composite output (it's not the same player that I mentioned above; I have two of them).

Not sure if you are aware but many blu ray titles are actually region free - you just have to use a database like regionfreemovies to confirm. The exceptions are usually box sets or certain movie studios that always insist on locking to region.

We also get around this with multiple PS3 consoles of different regions A/1 and B/2 - works like a charm. as there are only 3 regions. When you travel next time bring one back. If you are lucky enough to encounter a jailbroken one, you can actually swap the regions (although not officially supported)

If you want to watch Blu Ray discs you really need a HD TV with HDMI input. Otherwise you'll just be watching SD.

But they may have blurays they already own or be wanting to build a collection of them rather than buying obsolete DVD's that they will want to upgrade in the future.

Hi All

khull: I have a very eclectic movie and tv series collection from all over the world.. and a couple of the blu rays I have so far are locked to a specific region.  And we don't have gaming machines, so that rules that out lol.

B1GGLZ: As richms said, I have a very eclectic movie and tv series collectionon DVD, and the odd one on blu ray, and am more interested in just being able to watch them rather than watching them in the latest and greatest definition :)  Once the telly I have karks it, I will worry about replacing it with something more high tech then, but for now while it is working it will do the job.

Cheers

Rob
