hey guys,

New to the fora :). Would appreciate any advice or ideas on how to fix a problem; have trawled through the fora and tried several fixes without any difference.

Previously had a simple setup - PS3 to pioneer vsx lx-50 to Sony bravia kdl46z4500 all connected via hdmi. Worked like a charm for years, no problems. Used it last night without any problems. Got an Apple TV today and tried to hook it up into the 2nd hdmi port on the pioneer receiver. Turned everything on; hdmi led lit up and stayed on. Looked promising. Got sound from both PS3 and Apple tv coming through my receiver and surround speakers. But no image whatsoever on the TV.

I've
A) checked and rechecked cables are snugly into ports at all ends
B) swapped cables around so Apple tv and PS3 exchanged ports on receiver -no change - sound yes, image nada
C) changes hdmi ports on the TV, no help
D) connected Apple TV directly to TV via HDMI - works well
E) double checked that the right inputs are selected on receiver (no upoccupied ports as it only has 2), and TV
F) factory reset both TV and receiver - nothing
G)left everything off for several minutes and retried - nothing
H) turned off IP conv and video processing on receiver - nothing (although afaik the receiver doesn't process video when going through HDMI, just pass through)
I) turned off HDMI control on TV - nothing
J) set receiver to pass through audio to TV - no sound

The HDMI indicator on receiver up solidly when PS3 is turned on; display screen States PCm.then I flick the TV selection to the correct tv port, HDMI indicator flicks on and off, then remains solidly on. I assume this means that the handshake between source, receiver, and display worked (or is it just source and receiver that it indicates?)

Anybody have any ideas what's wrong? Any other ideas on what rlse to try? Will resort to taking it in to see if I somehow damaged the output port but it's freaking expensive in New Zealand to repair AV stuff. Anybody know of a reliable non-ripoff won't-need-small-claims-tribunal outfit in auckland??

So now neither PS3 nor Apple TV gives picture on TV?

I'd say receiver is broken. Not sure

I may have missed this... but have you swapped out the cable from the receiver to the TV?
Second, is there a 'viedo off' function on the remote... something like the 'pure audio' mode that turns off the video output in order to give the amp its best chance to sound good for 2-channel audio?

Yep, I've swapped out the cable from receiver to tv (and tried the original cable to hook my Apple TV to the TV directly,
Works fine so it doesn't see to be a cable problem). And no i' not aware
Of any options to strip the video part of the hdmi signal out. Pretty old receiver but it worked well until yesterday and I'm loathe to shell out to replace it.

Any other ideas?

Can you send both inputs directly to the TV and output the TV audio back to the receiver? It wont solve the problem but would get you working. I'm guessing you'll need an optical cable for the audio.

Or try another receiver.

Yeah as above, does every device work hdmi'd straight to the TV individually?
Does each work to via the receiver individually?

Have you turned off all the hdmi sync crap?

Process of elimination to start with, helps narrow down exactly where the issue is coming from.

This would take away the benefit of 5.1 though. But yeah, receiver might be worthwhile.

No, you can do 5.1 audio over optical. You can't do HD audio over optical, but only bluray as a source is likely to be offering that.
5.1 on freeview HD is DVD level, so optical can handle this fine.

In fact that's how I've got my TIVO hooked up now come to think of it.
hdmi to the TV when I am watching just the news. Optical to receiver for the likes of NCIS or CSI, in which case it's 5.1 and the TV sound is muted.

TV will output 5.1 if the source is terrestrial HD, but not if source is hdmi, it only passes through stereo. If source to TV is hdmi and source to receiver is optical then all good, but if you want to go source to TV then back to receiver then no.

Yes, if the handshake is established between the source device and the TV, then the TV will announce itself as a 2 channel device and only stereo will be passed to it.
In which case it won't have 5.1 to offer back to the receiver.

If the component is beside the receiver, then hdmi to the TV and optical to the receiver may be doable?
I've got mine setup that way, but appreciate it's not for everyone.

It might be an HDCP handshaking issue after you did a power-off. Usually it's best if the source can "see" the display when it is powered on. Try this sequence:

1.   Turn everything off (at the wall socket) for at least 10 seconds.
2.   Put the cabling back to the way it was originally.
3.   Power on the TV, turn it on, set the input to the receiver HDMI in.
4.   Power on the receiver, turn it on, set its input to the PS3 HDMI in.
5.   Power on the PS3, turn it on.

If that doesn't work then try reversing steps 4 & 5.

If you get a picture then check if it can survive a power-off and re-start of each device. It doesn't then may be you have use standby instead of power-off.

Are the HDMI inputs assignable to AV inputs?

I wonder if it has broken the assignment and needs to be redone?

I had similar issue with Chromecast and LX60 but it is all working now, not even sure exactly how i fixed it in the end :P
