I have a mate after a $1000 or less projector. He wants a great 60" Image and it's short throw, say < 5M. Doesn't care about 3D. Would like something quiet, He will be gaming on it. Needs 1080P and will project onto a white wall.

Panny make nice projectors and BenQ surprisingly. Epson as well.

He would consider second hand.

For gaming look for those with gaming modes, otherwise processing can cause lag

Projectors have a relative high devaluation rate, so you get a lot of projector for your money in the 2nd hand market. However look out image problems, so it pays to check the imagery if you can. Full field raster images of RGB and greyscale should highlight any major problems.
Check the filter, has the filter been cleaned or was it ever cleaned.
How many bulbs has it gone through? Projectors can reset used hours when inserting a bulb.

Viewsonic PLED range. W500-W800, $500-$800 depending on which one. I have the W500 which is at the bottom of the range, I have it setup in the lounge now and then with a pull down screen. Picture is bright, can get a 100" screen. Also have it setup for 3D movie watching which works really well. I use the IO Gear Complete+ which I picked up for $55 off Ebay for enabling the 3D for the 3D ready projector so I can plug a 3D blu-ray player straight into the projector and active 3D glasses G15-DLP's for $10-$11 each.

I can also hook the laptop up and do some gaming, works great with that no lag :-)

Who can argue about 30000 hours lamp life, plus being portable is a bonus.

I would recommend the Pro9000 but that's $2000+
