I'll be building this cheap system in a few days,

Athlon X2 4600                $98
Gigabyte MA-78GM-S2h     $145
KIngston 2gig                  $78
Samsung spinpoint 500gig $148
Asus Dvd-rw                   $43
High-power 370W             $56
MCE remote                     $47

Will be running Xp with mediaportal as a client in the bedroom. I'm hoping the mce remote will work with mediaportal, and that the radeon chipset won't cause any issues. About $800 all up.

So how much extra for the copy of XP?

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

Good point, another $140 for the os. It would be cheaper if I could run an os with Mythtv

I've just bought the same motherboard as it seems like the ultimate HTPC mobo. But I'm looking to use one of AMD's new low power CPUs like the BE-2350. Have you looked at these processors too - just curious how you decided on your choice of proc?

Be aware with this mobo to ensure you have Dolby turned off if you use the onboard sound as there have been issues after prolonged use of crackles and pops in the audio being generated in either the left or right channel (right for me). The fault dissapears after you turn Dolby off. I only became aware of it when i stopped using my 5.1 receiver for a time. It has been talked about more in the AVR forums.

I think AMD are renaming those cpu's (X2 4850?). I would have gone for one but the place I'm getting the parts from were out of stock, and I am impatience personified.

The 4600 is a good price/power choice for what I want it for, just a client. I have an intel dual core in the server.

Thanks, wasn't aware of this glitch. Hopefully will be fixed in a bios update?
