Hi,

I have a Yamaha Home theatre receiver RXV260 that supports HDMI 1.1

I have the latest Apple TV (4K) and this connects to the receiver and then the receiver connects to my Sony 4k TV.

This all works fine when TVOS 10.2.2 is installed. When I upgrade to the any later version of TVOS then I get a degraded picture on the TV - areas of the screen displaying dots.

I have connected the apple TV direct to the Sony (i.e. take the receiver out of the mix) and that works fine.

So obviously something has changed in TVOS since 10.2.2 that is causing an issue with the receiver.

I was fine staying at 10.2.2 and ignoring the requests from Apple to update TVOS but now notice the new movies eg. Kingsman wont play on TVOS 10.2.2 due to HDCP errors.

Help! any suggestions gratefully appreciated

The new Apple TV is the 'least compatible piece of kit' on the market at the moment...

Try dropping the output of your Apple TV down to 4:2:0 8-bit 30Hz...

If that doesn't work, I'm picking you'll need an HDCP down convertor to get it to work properly again.

Or, get yourself an HDCP 2.2 capable receiver.

Thanks will try that. Does the HDCP down convertor go between the apple TV and the receiver or ... the receiver and the TV?

It depends on the down convertor, but they are typically end-points in the HDMI chain so I'd put it right before the TV.

If you want the best picture quality out of your 4K TV and the latest Apple TV you're bet to bypass that old receiver until you can upgrade. Connect them direct and then use optical audio or some other way of passing the audio stream to the receiver.

Had the same HDCP problem with my AppleTV4, funnily enough when trying to watch Kingsman 2 as well. After doing a reset to no effect, I then proceeded to check all the hdmi connections, bypassing various components. Still no joy. An online search proved it was neither a recent nor an isolated problem with the ATV. The only thing that eventually solved the problem was selecting ‘reset and install update’ on settings menu of the ATV. And then set everything up again. Grrr Apple.

I like the idea of the new Apple TV, but the remote (and its lack of complete compatibility with Harmony remotes) and HDCP / general HDMI issues means I'll wait until Apple has another re-think.

Have to agree. Went into it not expecting much, and that’s what I got! The HDCP issue cost me an hour and a half of faffing around first though. Maybe I should send Apple a bill at my usual hourly rate.

Edit: Actually, no it’s Chiristmas, so double time plus a call out fee.

And as far as the remote goes, I have grown to actually quite like it. I have multiple harmony remotes for different rooms, but thanks to CEC the little Siri remote is all I need to control and watch a movie on ATV-Onkyo Receiver-Panasonic Projector setup I have.
