Sorry if this question has already been asked a lot, but I couldn't find any answers using the search engine.

I am wanting to buy a 32in LCD screen, and want one that isnt going to annoy me when watching sports because it has ghosting/lag. From talking to sales staff, it seems like I will need to go to a 100hz screen to avoid this. Is this true, or are there some 50hz screens that show fast moving objects well?

What about the refresh time? I see some are 8m/s, right down to 3m/s. Does this have more an effect on ghosting that the 50hz v 100hz?

The TV will be used with MySky (not the hi def version as it will be in the bedroom, using the multiroom option from sky), so would getting a really hi spec/excellent pic quality TV, and spending the extra for it, actually be a waste of money if I'm not watching from a hi def signal?

I've found a deal on a Toshiba 32C3500 that apparetly is slightly higher than 50hz, and is $986. Ayone have an thoughts on this tv?

I also see the Hitachi L32A01A for $1,099?

Or will I need to step up to about the $1,500 price range to get what I'm looking for?

I also have concerns about this as my parents bought an LG 37" LCD a year ago and it's great but they get slight ghosting when watching fast sports like rugby or soccer.

One thing I was thinking about when I'm ready to but a new LCD TV is to take a soccer or rugby DVD and ask them to play it on the TV's that I'm interested in to get a good indication of how it displays sports.

Ghosting on LCDs, as I understand it, occurs due to the time it takes for the pixels to change state and, in particular, the fact that some transitions occur faster than others e.g a grey area transition occurs much faster than a white to black so response time is definitely important. Of course manufacturers figures might not be a reliable comparison.

Advances in LCDs are trying to minimize the problem. Ironically some of these solutions bring the curse of the CRT TV back into play, namely "flicker".

50 hz versus 100 hertz is probably more about compensating for the ability of the eye to distinguish the frames, particularily with action scenes, by adding frames and using interpolation.

Interestingly, I found that after a while of watching an LCD TV I no longer noticed the ghosting. Perhaps the brain is the best video processor of all.

As the prevoius poster indicated, really the best thing to do is to compare TVs displaying a range of the content you are going to watch.

Its interesting to note that 32" plasmas are very popular in Asia, however we see 37 as the smallests here, I think there would be a good market for them.
