I am looking at the Samsung 6 Series LA46a650 LCD - I was initially looking at the Sony Bravia V or W series but the Samsung appears to blow the Sony away. Ive been hearing about the 7 series but cant find out anywhere if these are likely to come to NZ and when, and more importantly to they have an inbuilt freeview tuner?

The only reason Im holding off buying is because if the 7 series has the tuner and the 6 doesnt, it makes sense to wait and save $500+

I am after the exact same info. I emailed Samsung last week asking about the 750/tuner/release date and have heard nothing, is their a better way to contact Samsung if people on here don't know the answers?

I think youll find its not series 7 you are after but Series 8. May want to do some more reading about what ever happened to Series 7.

For the record... if freeview H.264 is build in its not free. Look at the the V400 sony.... $2799 RRP for a Crap TV with freeview. Better off buying a LA40N with freeview ontop.

I must agree. Went into Harvey Normans to check out the new Sonys with Freeview tuners built in. The quality was below expectations. They had the model before next to it with a freeview box connected - heaps better! Wonder if they'll release the X series with tuners.

Just in case you don't know, check out the promotions page on the Samsung NZ site. I was um-ing and ah-ing too until I saw this:

Summary: Buy a Series 6 (40" or 46" only) at Harvey Norman and you get a free freeviewHD box (which IMHO, apart from aesthetics, is better than having a built-in tuner). Offer ends August 3 though!

Also, Harvey Norman are doing their own free SkyHDi offer as well. Not sure exactly how that works though as it didn't apply to me - it only applies to existing Sky customers.

Got a 10% discount for paying cash too :)

Edit: By the way, if you go for this offer, just make sure you don't get sucked in to buying an expensive HDMI cable. They'll say you need one for the freeview box.. which you do.. but not one that costs $200!! Get one online for ~$20 instead.

I think of even more interest than the 8 series is the 9 series with local dim LED...meant to be out in august in the U.S and Europe. God knows when it may come here though. From what I have read, the 9 series certainly seems to be a significant advance on current LCD tech. The new sony x series will have a model built around tri luminous LED. Seems the way forward for better blacks etc. Price will be interesting. Retail for the 46inch series 9 in the U.S is $3k i think.

Seems the product cycles are very short for tvs at the moment. I would be a little reluctant to shell out big money on the latest model only to have it replaced (even overseas) by something very different, and one presumes at least in this case significantly more advanced, within 3 months.

I Heard back from Samsung, not much use as a reply. I have heard 7 Series will be released in August with Freeview Tuner and the Ethernet port for streaming content.

The advantage over a 6 series and free Freeview (from Harvey Norman) to me, is a single remote control and the ethernet port which can stream mp4 format movies and other content for display.

Hi Daniel, I went to the Tory St store in Wellington and paid $2550, however...

I paid for it on Sunday after being told it would be available for pickup on Tuesday which was then revised to "mid next week" just as I was about to pay for it.

This morning (Friday) I rang up to see what was going on and the current status now is that they don't know when they will be in!! Not happy at all. The freeview promotion has to be redeemed before August 17. I'm tempted to get a refund and start again somewhere else.

Update: The unofficial word I just got from an employee is that their batch is not in the country yet and realistically won't be for another 3 weeks.

Harvey Norman have just lost a customer for life - do not BS on delivery dates just to get a sale.

Samsung NZ has none. Worth the wait.... You'll still get freeview. Just maybe before you get the TV.... :-)

Except you need the serial number from the TV you don't have yet when filling out the freeview redemption form, which in turn needs to be sent in by 17 August. Could prove difficult..

So I decided "sod it" and went and got a plasma instead :)

Okay maybe its worth the wait then. However over the weekend I was in JBHiFi and they told me to also consider a 50 (and a smaller one, maybe 40) inch Panasonic plasma. Now im confused to hell. All I want it a nice looking TV and the Plasma showed the documentary that JBHiFi were playing ALOT nicer. It was snow and the snow on the Plasma was white but on the Samsung (and the rest of the LCD's) the snow was blue-ish!

I know there are so many articles about LCD vs Plasma, and Im tending towards the Samsung still a little because the aesthetics of the Panasonic are ugly! Its ruined everything though - you know when you get your heart set on something and then they go and show you something else.

Anyone else gone through the same consideration - Samsung LA46a650 vs the Panasonic Plasma (sorry dont know the model number but its Full HD etc, same as Samsung except $200-300 more expensive) and can tell me which one they ended up buying and why???

There is huge debate around LCD vs plasma. Alot of people will say plasma is better for motion. Newer LCD with 100hz and various other processing additions may have narrowed the gap a little. Funnily there are some comments on the australian DTV website menitoning some problems people have had with the new pana has some problems watching sport related to processing of motion. Whichever shop you go in seems to push one or other depending on the views of the sales people.

Personally i looked really closely at the new pana. Only thing i have been clearly able to differentiate between the samsung and it, and in fact LCDs and plasma in general, is that the picture is alot softer to my eyes on the plasma. So much depends on environment and set up of the TV though. Personal choice is such a big thing about picture quality, colour etc. Need to see them set up side by side and decide for yourself.
