There’s talk on the forum about a new satellite for Sky that Cyril thinks will be used for more HD content.

Does this imply a new satellite dish will be required since presumably the new one won’t be in the same place as the existing one?

Does this scupper my plans to use multi-room for 4 months while it’s free, and then switch the cable from the multi-room MySky box to an SD Freeview box?

Hi, no will have no impact, you may have noticed that some 18months or so ago Sky started installing dual throat LNBs (they are oval) these can see both orbit locatons 160E(D1) and 156E(C1/D3). However these LNBs only have one output, and therefore can only look at one orbit location at a time, if you have more than one box then the other box looses signal. The new LNBs have 4outputs, so more than one box can be connected and at will select either orbit location. The presence of 22kHz tone generated by the box causes the output of the LNB to select 156E, or 160E if no tone.

Regardless of all that, for now all transmissions (including HD) are still on 160E D1, so no immediate need to see 156E, Sky will need to add more cables to the new LNB two to the HDi and one to a SD box. In theroy there is no reason why you cannot split the feed that supplied D1 to teh HDi, or use one of the other outputs of the LNB

The information I got from Sky today is that they will be installing a "twin cable", but don't have the cable at the monent.

A little OT, will this type of install be standard for all Sky or just MySky HDi users? and as a result will we see Sky and Foxtel share content? e.g sky nz decoders will pick up Discovery channel from C1/D3 instead of sky having to re-broadcast it on D1?

These are all questions you need to direct at Sky, I dont work for them or privey to any info, just reading through the lines. That said, it seems logical that with 750,000 standard subscribers out there that SD services will stay and be expanded on D1, leaving HD services to expand on D3 so that there is a controlled level of upgrades neede. Guess in 3-4yrs we will all have full dual orbit access.

All services currently are on D1 at 160E, in addintion future services will also be on 156E on lowband capacity provided by D3. D2 is at 152E was originally intended to go to 156E but was redirected to 152E when B2 showed signs of falling to the same fate as B1. Hence the labeling in the current Sky decoders for the LNB setup and ch999 incorrectly show D2. If you have a dual orbit location LNB (oval) which sky have been installing for 18months or more then you will be able to see 156E at which only C1 is curretly positioned. Problem is that is only a single output LNB, so its one location or the other, not much good for a multituner setup such as the HDi or multiple boxs.
